Thank you for the interesting article on mandated community service. I know for a fact that community service is sometimes the ONLY WAY to get a youthful offender to “pay” for their crimes. Many of these kids are unable to afford cash fines for their indescretions, and since they do not go to school or to work, they have the time to serve.
I am also lucky that I haven’t gotten to the point that I see youth volunteers performing various activities and automatically assume they were forced to by court. I know many kids (including my own) who willingly serve where ever they are needed!
