Fire completely destroys 64 Elm Street home

Posted at 8:27 a.m., Updated 9:35 a.m. on October 22, 2008 by John T. Ryan

An early morning fire completely destroyed a home under renovation at 64 Elm Street. The home was owned by Robert and Theresa Higgins Witkiewicz (more photos). No one was injured in the blaze. Fire Chief Chad Frechette said the house was fully engulfed in flames when his department arrived shortly after 4 a.m. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. The owners had just moved their possessions into the home and were hoping to install their furnace this coming weekend. The fire resulted in electrical service being cut off about 4:20 a.m. in several parts of Peru. Service was restored to most people about 6:30 a.m.

Robert Witkiewicz is a 7th grade math teacher at Northern Adirondack Central School. Theresa Witkiewicz is the former Theresa Higgins of Peru. The couple had been renovating and greatly expanding the home for several months and were preparing to move to Peru from the Chazy Lake area.

The Keeseville and South Plattsburgh Fire Departments assisted under mutual aid while the Morrisonville Department stood by the Peru station. Rescue Hose #5 also assisted.
