Young children will love it!

By Adele Douglas

What do you do when you retire from teaching and still love kids?  Two of Peru Primary’s recent retirees have developed a story program for young children and are offering it twice a month at the Peru Free Library.  Diane Sabourin (Music) and Esther Dominy (Kindergarten) have been working regularly together on this effort for about a year now and carefully plan out each program, making sure that the kids are entertained and involved.  They also introduce some of the concepts and vocabulary the children will encounter in kindergarten.  Another objective of the program is to get kids comfortable with coming to the library and enjoying the basement room set aside for children at the Peru Free Library. With fingerplays, songs, movement and stories, these hour long sessions go by quickly and have been very well received.  “The kids love it” says Donna Wolf, who regularly brings her nursery school.

These two ladies are to be commended for giving so generously of their time and wonderful talent. I took my almost two year old grandson to the Jan 14th story hour for the first time and was in awe of the skill these two retired teachers displayed as they varied the age-appropriate activities and maintained the attention of approximately thirty preschool children for an hour. Thank you, Miss Dominy and Mrs. Sabourin.
