New webpage for reporting zoning violations online

By Donald McBrayer
As part of a program to tighten enforcement on violations of the Town of Peru Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations, and the NYS Building Code the town website www.perutown.com now offers a form for reporting such violations. It can be found on the Zoning Page at: http://www.perutown.com/zviolationform.htm.On July 6th a workshop was conducted for the purpose of dealing with several code violations in Peru. During this workshop the Town Board addressed minor annoyances from unregistered vehicles to overgrown lawns, and authorized Peru’s Code Enforcement Officer, Paul Blaine, to tighten enforcement on ongoing code violations concerning property maintenance.Any violation concerning a safety issue will be investigated and acted upon quickly, but the Code Enforcement Office will be increasing enforcement on violations that concern property maintenance as well. This will focus more attention to violations which include unregistered motor vehicles, improper garbage handling, discarded appliances and junk, overgrown vegetation, the security & maintenance of abandoned buildings, and of course, safety risks. The Code Enforcement Office does not plan to “patrol” the streets seeking out all violations, but will gladly look into any potential violation that is reported.Any property maintenance violation reported to the Code Enforcement Office will first be added to the office software database, followed by a field inspection to determine if a violation is actually occurring. If no violation is found the person filing the complaint will be notified. If a violation is found the person committing the violation will be notified by person if possible, or by phone or letter if not. They will be informed of the violation, and given 30 days to correct it. Mr. Blaine says most violations are dealt with within the 30 day “grace period”. If the violation is not dealt with, a second opportunity is afforded to comply by certified letter with a firm deadline for compliance. If, after a second warning, the violation is still not corrected, an appearance ticket will be issued, and could carry a fine up to $250 per day.

The violation reporting form, http://www.perutown.com/zviolationform.htm, gives residents an opportunity to report violations as a way to help keep Peru a safe and attractive community we can all be proud to call home. Any information submitted on the form is kept confidential, and will not be made public without permission from the person reporting the offense.

If anyone has any questions concerning possible violations, or to discuss what might constitute a violation they can call the Code Enforcement Office at 518-643-2745 Ext. 3 or email them at: peruzoning@perutown.com
The Code Enforcement Hours are: Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri. 9:00am – 12:00pm, Wednesday 4:00pm to 7:00pm
