Bluegrass Gospel Project music to perform in Peru

The Bluegrass Gospel Project will be performing at the Peru Community Church on Friday, February 11, 2011. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and offer two 45-minute sets of music with an intermission. The location is 13 Elm Street in Peru, NY. A portion of the proceeds of this concert will benefit the church’s arts council fund. Tickets are available at the door on the evening of the performance: $8 general admission, $5 for seniors, students, and children.

The Bluegrass Gospel Project’s debut performance was at First Night Burlington in 2001.  Since that time, the band has delighted audiences throughout the northeastern U.S., as well as in nearby Quebec.  The BGP recently performed for former president George W. Bush and Associate Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas at a private function in the Adirondacks.

The BGP’s repertoire draws from a sub-genre of bluegrass, the body of music developed in the mountains of the southeastern U.S. during the twentieth century.  Bluegrass restyled all types of traditional Appalachian music in the southeast, including the hymns and spirituals of the Christian tradition.  However, the bluegrass gospel style evolved independently, outside of the church, and is therefore most accurately described as a populist form of spiritual music. The BGP keeps this tradition very much alive as they deliver their own brand of gospel and secular songs meant for all people and all faiths.

This six-piece acoustic ensemble features vocalist Colby Crehan of Burlington, Plattsburgh native Steve Light on banjo, Vermonters Paul Miller on guitar, Kirk Lord on upright bass, and Gene White, Jr on fiddle.  Returning to the band after a three year sabbatical is Jim DiSabito on mandolin. By virtue of their eclectic tastes, the BGP presents songs covering a wide variety of musical styles, drawing on bluegrass, folk, and Americana influences. The band’s presentation features gorgeous vocal harmonies supported by tasteful acoustic instrumentation.

Since their inception almost a decade ago, the BGP has released five full-length recordings, each of which has met with critical acclaim. Many new songs have been added to the group’s repertoire since their 2009 appearance in Peru. BGP concerts are guaranteed wholesome for the entire family, so come and enjoy an evening of great music while supporting an organization dedicated to bringing top-notch entertainment to our area !
