New Appointments and Highway Department Issues dominate Town Board Meeting

By Donald McBrayer

The Town Board held its regular meeting on Monday, May 9th.  Everyone was present.

Three town positions were filled. Paul Sarbou was hired as the new Highway Mechanic/MEO. Mr. Sarbou is replacing Bryan Duprey who recently left the position for a job with the Sheriff’s Department. Saubou will start May 26th for $22 an hour and will have to complete a 90-day probation period.

Kathy Flynn was accepted for the position of Recreation Supervisor (formerly titled Youth Director) with a $1500 annual salary.

Christine Nuzzo was accepted to replace Pat Uliva on the Peru Youth Commission, a voluntary position with a three-year term.

Highway Superintendent Mike Farrell reported on flood damage to Fox Farm Road. The 4’ culvert that was installed following the 1998 flood was not able to handle the recent rain resulting in extensive shoulder damage. Farrell proposes replacing the culvert with two 5’ culverts and concrete headwalls & spillways to handle future flooding. Five local contractors have submitted prices for the project. A decision will most likely be made to go forward at the next Regular Meeting.

Mr. Farrell also informed the Board that the Highway Department garage roof has a leak allowing water into an electric power panel. The Board authorized gathering prices for repairing, not replacing, the roof.
