Natural gas is priced at all-time low prices; NYSEG is willing to bring it to more customers

By John T. Ryan

The current cost to heat a home or hot water with natural gas is less than half the cost of heating with fuel oil or propane. This situation has many Peru residents wishing they had access to natural gas on their street or road.

NYSEG claims it would like to provide the service to additional areas if there is sufficient demand and advises that people should call 800-572-1111. Press 3 twice and you will be connected to the engineering group. They will log your call. If sufficient calls are received they will launch a study to determine if bringing gas to your area is feasible. Needless to say, it would be to your benefit to encourage your neighbors to call this number.

Conversion costs have made some people reluctant to switch to natural gas; however, there are grants, energy audits and low cost loan programs available to help people at all income levels. Please see our previous story for details.

NYSEG’s desire to bring more natural gas to Peru was mentioned by JCEO and NYSERDA representatives at the October 11th Town Board meeting. The Peru Gazette called NYSEG to clarify the procedure.
