Town of Peru Has a Job Opening

The Town of Peru Water and Wastewater Department is accepting applications for the position of Maintenance Worker1 / Maintenance Worker 2 if qualified.

Duties
Primarily assist in the operation and maintenance of the two wastewater facilities during an assigned shift.
Assists in the operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment facility, water distribution system and sewage collection systems.
Does related work as required.

Distinguishing Features:
Performs work under the direct supervision of the plant operator or other operations personnel. Learns the duties and routines necessary for the proper operation and maintenance of the wastewater and water treatment plants. Becomes familiar with the sewage collection and water distribution system and components. Is expected to become proficient in various tasks and carry them out independently when qualified.

Illustrative examples of work:
Learns and/or assists in starting and stopping pumps, motors, air compressors, and related machinery and equipment. Learns to and/or assists in taking samples, in recording readings from meters and gauges. Learns to and/or assists in making necessary tests for control of plant operation. Performs custodial duties in and around plant. Assist other personnel in the wastewater collection and water distribution systems. Ability to work outside in all weather conditions. Weekends, holidays and emergency on call status as required. Reads/removes and repairs water meters in the homes of customers. Assist in the repair of sewage collection and water distribution system piping. Checks sewage pump stations and assist in repairs and pump replacement.

Required knowledge and skills:
Knowledge of basic chemistry and basic science is desirable but not necessary. Ability to learn principles and procedures relating to the operation and maintenance of a wastewater and water treatment plant. Ability to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions. Ability to read and understand blueprints and equipment manuals. Mechanical aptitude to learn, alertness, dependability, together with a desire to learn and progress. Ability and willingness to further pursue education and training to become certified as 2A wastewater operator and 2A water treatment plant operator. (At Towns Expense)

Minimum Qualifications Maintenance Worker 1.
(a) One (1) year of experience in the construction and maintenance of water or sewage lines; or
(b) Two (2) years’ experience as a skilled worker in two or more mechanical trades including carpentry; or
(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Eligibility of an appropriate New York State Driver’s License at time of application. Possession of license at time of appointment. Class B preferred and required within 1st year.

Minimum Qualifications Maintenance Worker 2.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
(a) Two (2) years of experience in the construction and maintenance of water and sewage lines; or
(b) Three (3) years experience as a skilled worker in two or more mechanical trades including carpentry; or
(c) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above. Also, where required, possession of either:
1. A current appropriate grade-level Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for the designated plant classification as governed by the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code; or
2. A current appropriate grade-level Water Treatment Plant Operator certificate issued by the New York State Department of Health for the designated plant classification as governed by the provisions of the New York State Sanitary Code;
Water treatment (2A)
Wastewater treatment (3A) or (2A)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Eligibility of an appropriate New York State Driver’s License at time of application. Possession of license at time of appointment. Class B preferred and required within 1st year.

NOTE: All licenses/certificates must be kept current.
