An important message from John R. Brumsted, MD President and CEO, The University of Vermont Health Network

I want to update you on the cyberattack that has impacted some systems throughout the UVM Health Network.

Most importantly, I want you to know that all of our affiliates in Vermont and New York are continuing to provide high-quality patient care. The entire network has risen to this challenge, once again illustrating the value and thoroughness of our preparation for unforeseen circumstances. Leaders from throughout the health network report that our staff is responding with camaraderie and pride for their organizations, and that speaks to the strength of our team. We are here for our communities, regardless of what obstacles may arise.

You also should know that we are working around the clock to restore our systems as quickly as possible. We’re making steady progress, but we know it will take time to get back to normal operations. In the meantime, our staff is following well-practiced procedures activated when we lose connectivity in order to ensure the safety of all who require and provide care during this incident.

We take protecting patient privacy very seriously and have plans in place for situations where our network systems are affected. When we became aware of this event, we took quick action and followed our emergency procedures to protect patient information. We are working in partnership with state and federal law enforcement to determine the full scope of this attack and, if it is determined that any personal information has been compromised, we will notify those impacted and follow all established protocols.

We are in the process of communicating directly with patients, including those whose appointments have been impacted by this issue. I know how much difficulty and stress this has caused for our patients and staff, and I appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work through this.

Our response to this cyberattack is a coordinated effort throughout the UVM Health Network. We will resolve these issues in the same way we tackle every challenge we face – by working together to meet the needs of our patients and communities.

Sincerely,
John
