Hill and Hollow Music 2021 Concert Schedule

Dear Friends,

It has been a long haul, and I trust that this finds you well as we begin to come out the other end of the crisis. It feels so good to write about something positive and pleasant, and I hope that our news will lift you up and fill you with glad anticipation for upcoming gatherings with wonderful live music!

We are pleased to announce our schedule of concerts in the coming months, with an exciting roster of artists and ensembles representing a wide variety of music genres: classical and contemporary classical; early music of the renaissance and baroque; Scottish and French-Canadian traditional roots music; and improvisatory jazz, klezmer, and world music.

Summer events will take place outdoors, in the interest of health and safety during the pandemic, as well as for greater enjoyment of the long-awaited “gentle season.” We’ll have a large tent on the east lawn of Weatherwatch Farm and folks may spill outside of its perimeters. Additionally, some of our artists will participate in the “Curbside at Harborside” drive-in concerts at Plattsburgh Marina. By October we hope to be able to move indoors and hold concerts again in the naturally perfect acoustics of the Saranac Methodist Church. We hope also to hold concerts in the Church of the Assumption and the Assumption of Mary School, both in Redford.

See our schedule below, and find more extensive information on our website. Feel free to share this information with your friends, and encourage them to get on our email list. As in the past, we will send more details in advance of each concert. Looking forward to seeing you again soon – please stay well!

Yours, Angela Brown

Kathryn Sloat, harp – “Moon & Stars” – Saturday, June 19 at 7:30 pm
North Country native Kathryn Sloat “whose harp playing evoked the angels” (Brooklyn Discovery), is known for her work in opera, Broadway, orchestra, and contemporary chamber music in New York City and throughout the United States. Her program has a nocturnal theme. The one-hour concert (without intermission) will finish just as night begins to fall – how poetic! Among the mix of classical, contemporary, and popular works are Debussy’s “Clair de lune,” Glinka’s “Nocturne,” Salzedo’s “Chanson dans la Nuit,” and Henry Mancini’s “Moon River,” Optional fundraising dinner before music; dessert for all afterwards.

Krakauer & Tagg’s “Mazel Tov Cocktail Party” (A Good Vibes Explosion!) Saturday, July 17 at 7:30 pm & Sunday, July 18 at 4:00 pm
Clarinet wizard David Krakauer is godfather to Kathleen Tagg’s quirky keys & production, Iranian dynamo Martin Shamanpoor’s hand drumming, jazz guru Jerome Harris’s driving bass, rapper Sarah MK’s trenchant rhymes and guitar-meister Yoshie Fruchter’s sinuous lines. Jeremy Flower and Selwa Abd produced beats for layering with the live performance. Together they bring enormous musical and cultural diversity to create powerful and unique original material. Polka and Square Dance never sounded like this before! A special “signature” cocktail will be created by local award-winning Murray’s Fools Distilling Co.
Ingrid Jensen & Christine Jensen with Tim Collins

Saturday, August 7 at 7:30 pm & Sunday, August 8 at 4:00 pm

Sisters Ingrid Jensen, trumpet and Christine Jensen, alto sax are among the most original voices on the international jazz scene, headlining jazz festivals and clubs around the globe for more than 20 years. They especially enjoy performing in the intimate setting of a quintet, where they can give free reign to their intuitive sibling trust – “Ingrid’s mellifluous trumpet technique melds with Christine’s warm, legato alto to conjure the aura of a wordless vocal” – combined with the creativity of renowned colleagues, here Marcos Varela on bass, Jon Wikan on drums, and Plattsburgh native Tim Collins. Hailed a “world-class vibes player,” Tim is currently based in Munich, Germany, where he is active in the European jazz scene.
Cantrip – Monday, September 6 (Labor Day) at 4:00 pm
The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief, and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in the band’s musical arrangements, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship. Swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar, and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to raise the roof. Dan Houghton, Jon Bews, and Eric McDonald stir the elements in a witches’ cauldron, slowly coalescing them into chaotic order. Since forming in Edinburgh 20 years ago, Cantrip has evolved but always stayed true to their Scottish-Celtic traditional music roots.
Muller-Steigerwalt Duo – Sunday, October 3 at 3:00 pm
Duo pianists Dana Muller and Gary Steigerwalthave performed extensively in the United States, South America, and Scotland for 35 years. Their programs encompass the historical and stylistic gamut of the piano four-hand genre. The duo have recorded extensively for the Centaur label. Their recording of four-hand works by early 20th-century European composers was hailed “an outstanding disc” by Fanfare, and their disc of 19th-century Romantic compositions was praised for its “panache and conviction.” Navona Records recently released their latest album In Your Head, featuring new works commissioned by the couple, including Dreamworlds by Pulitzer Prize winner Lewis Spratlan. The duo will premiere a new multi-movement work recently composed for them by Lewis Spratlan on October 3.
Horszowski Trio – Sunday, November 14 at 3:00 pm
Since their debut performance in New York City in 2011, the Horszowski Trio has become a vital force in the international chamber music world, touring extensively throughout North America, Europe, the Far East, and India. Traversing the extensive oeuvre of traditional piano trio repertoire and introducing audiences to new music that they have commissioned and premiered, they are noted for giving performances that are “lithe, persuasive” (The New York Times), “eloquent and enthralling” (The Boston Globe), and described as “the most compelling American group to come on the scene” (The New Yorker). They recently released a recording of the complete piano trios by Robert Schumann on AVIE Records, receiving tremendous acclaim: “great care and affection” (BBC Radio); “intoxicating” (Gramophone); “exciting and deeply felt” (Strings); “fresh, supple and fantastic” (The Strad).
Le Vent du Nord – Sunday, February 6, 2022 at 3:00 pm
A leading force in Quebec’s progressive francophone folk movement, Le Vent du Nordcreates intense, joyful and dynamic live performances that expand the bounds of tradition in striking new directions. The group’s vast repertoire draws from both traditional sources and original compositions, while enhancing its hard-driving soulful music (rooted in the Celtic diaspora) with a broad range of global influences. Le Vent du Nord has enjoyed meteoric success, performing well over 2,000 concerts over four continents and racking up several prestigious awards, including a Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros, two Junos(Canada’s Grammys), a Félix at ADISQ, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and “Artist of the Year” at Folk Alliance Annual Gala.
Infusion Baroque – Sunday, March 13, 2022 at 3:00 pm
Playing music of the 17th- and 18th-centuries on historical instruments, Infusion Baroque enthralls audiences with creative programming and performances described as “dynamic and alive” (Early Music America). Their debut recording of trio sonatas by C.P.E. Bach was described as “real baroque … gripping and full of character” (Radio-Canada). Their latest album, a world-premiere recording of Kreüsser quintets was nominated for an Opus Prize. “The playing is superb … with a liveliness and unforced energy that seems to grow naturally out of the music… combining spontaneity and abandon with technical perfection.” (Fanfare)
Calmus – Sunday, April 24, 2022 at 3:00 pm
The a cappella quintet Calmus embodies the rich choral tradition of its hometown of Leipzig, the city so closely associated with Bach and Mendelssohn.  Whether singing music by those German masters or other works in its diverse repertoire, Calmus captivates with its charming stage presence, flawless technique and entertaining presentation. All graduates of Leipzig‘s renowned St. Thomas Church Choir School, Calmus offers the unique combination of a pure soprano voice with four male voices ranging from bass to countertenor.  The seamless blend of these five voices lends itself to the almost limitless range of music the ensemble offers, from renaissance and baroque masters through great German romantic works, all the way to contemporary choral repertoire, as well as pop songs and jazz.
