“We know there was slavery. We know that. We tend to think that it wasn’t as prevalent here in the North as it obviously was,” Ervin said. “It’s just unsettling that people would have been treated that way, that we would tax people based on someone who looked like me being called a wench for 30 pounds. How sad is that?”
