Eat Dessert First: A Celebration of Life Set for June 9

FitzPatrick Cancer Center’s survivorship celebration part of American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life

PLATTSBURGH, NY Eat Dessert First: A Celebration of Life, the FitzPatrick Cancer Center’s (FCC) signature celebration of cancer survivorship and part of the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay for Life, takes place Sunday, June 9 at the Clinton County Fairgrounds.

Ice cream sundaes will be offered in the Survivors Hall beginning at 4 p.m. After the Relay’s opening ceremonies, survivors are welcome to lead the walk in the first lap.

Each June, the FCC joins other cancer care organizations to honor cancer survivors and remind everyone that survivorship begins on the day of diagnosis.

The inaugural Eat Dessert First was held in 1994 to raise awareness about survivorship and bring attention to the challenges survivors face every day. Since then, the FitzPatrick Cancer Center has celebrated survivorship by inviting cancer survivors and their loved ones to enjoy a sweet treat together. What began as an early June ice cream social in the parking lot of the FCC became a community-wide event complete with free desserts and entertainment.  In 2012, Eat Dessert First became part of the American Cancer Society’s extraordinary Relay for Life.

Opening in 1990, the FCC set a new standard of cancer care in the North Country.  Offering a comprehensive and coordinated approach to patient care, high quality cancer services are provided under one roof. Support groups, educational opportunities and events like Eat Dessert First highlight the Center’s commitment to meeting the emotional and spiritual needs of those battling disease.
