Ironman Lake Placid takes place on July 19; road closures announced

LAKE PLACID, NY (July 6, 2026) – The 27th Ironman Lake Placid will take place on Sunday, July 19; its course defined along roads throughout Lake Placid, Keene, Jay, Upper Jay, Au Sable Forks and Wilmington. There will be a number of road closures throughout these communities.

The public should expect road closures and associated traffic delays beginning shortly after 5:00 a.m. that day. Traffic pattern changes and delays will impact communities along the bike and run course.

In Lake Placid/North Elba:

  • Cummings Rd. will be closed from 4:00 a.m. until midnight.
  • Mirror Lake Dr. from Northwood Rd. to Main St. in Lake Placid – closed from 5:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m on July 20.
  • Northwood Rd. from Rt. 86 to Mirror Lake Dr. – closed southbound from 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Parkside Dr. in Lake Placid – closed from Mirror Lake Dr. to Main St. from 5:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m on July 20.
  • Colden Ave. from School St. to Mill Pond Dr. – closed from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
  • Main St. from the Post Office to Station St. – closed from 5:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m on July 20.
  • Rt. 73 from Mill Pond Dr. to River Rd. – closed from 5:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m on July 20.
  • River Rd. – closed from 11:00 a.m. until midnight.
  • Bobsled Run Ln. – closed in both directions from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Parking will not be permitted overnight on Saturday, July 18 on Mirror Lake Dr. in front of the tennis courts, nor on Parkside Dr. from Main St. to Mirror Lake Dr. Parking on Main St. from Parkside Dr. near the post office south is also prohibited overnight on Saturday, July 18.

Outside Lake Placid:

  • Rt. 86 southbound to Lake Placid from Wilmington and Jay closed from 7:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.
  • Rt. 9N closed northbound from Keene to Glen Rd. in Jay from 6:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
  • Stickney Bridge Rd. – closed north and east bound from Glen Rd. to Rt. 9 from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m; detour traffic is permitted in the opposite lane to access Jay and Keene.
  • Rt. 9N southbound – closed from Stickney Bridge Rd. to the Rt. 86 intersection from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
  • Bilhuber Rd. will be closed to traffic from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
  • Haselton Rd. will remain open from Bilhuber Rd. to the Town of Black Brook; no vehicle travel south of Bilhuber Rd. until 4:00 p.m.
  • Rt. 73 south/eastbound from Lake Placid to Keene begins at 6:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Alternate routes:

  • Lake Placid to Jay: From Saranac Ave./Rt. 86, go left at High Peaks Resort to Mirror Lake Dr. Left on Northwood Rd. Left on Cobble Hill Rd. Left on Rt. 86 to Wilmington. Right on Rt. 86 to Jay. Expect delays in Lake Placid, Wilmington, and Jay 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Au Sable Forks to Wilmington: North on Main St. at Stewart’s. Left on Guideboard Rd. Left to Silver Lake Rd. Left on Bonnieview Rd. to Wilmington. Expect delays in Wilmington.
  • Au Sable Forks to Saranac Lake / Lake Placid: North on Main St. at Stewart’s to stop sign. Left on Guideboard Rd. Bear left at fork to Silver Lake Rd. Left on Union Falls Rd. to Rt. 3. Left on Rt. 3 to Saranac Lake. In Saranac Lake, take Rt. 86 East to Lake Placid.
  • Au Sable Forks to Keene: Rt. 9N West, crossing bridge go right to Sheldrake Rd. Sheldrake Rd. intersects with Stickney Bridge Rd. Turn left on Stickney Bridge Rd. to Rt. 9N in Jay. Turn left to Upper Jay and Keene.
  • Saranac Lake to I-87 Southbound: Rt. 3 West to Tupper Lake. Rt. 30 South to Long Lake. Rt. 28N to Newcomb. Rt. 2 East to Exit 29 on I-87/Rt. 28N to Warrensburg.
  • Points south on I-87: From northbound Rt. I-87 take exit 29 to Rt. 2 West to Rt. 28N. Turn right on Rt. 28N to Newcomb. Rt. 28N to Long Lake. Right on Rt. 30 to Tupper Lake. Right on Rt. 3 East to Saranac Lake. Take exit 30 for travel to Keene Valley, Keene or Lake Placid. Expect delays at Keene.
  • Points north on I-87 to Lake Placid: Going southbound on Rt. I-87, take exit 31 to Rt. 9N North. Rt. 9N North to Elizabethtown. Rt. 9N North to Rt. 73. Right on Rt. 73 to Keene. Expect delays at the intersection in Keene.
  • Keene to Lake Placid: Rt. 73 westbound lane open. Expect delays at River Rd./Ski Jumps intersection. Access Village of Lake Placid via Old Military Rd.
  • Lake Placid to Wilmington / Au Sable Forks / I-87 north: From Saranac Ave./Rt. 86, go left at Main St. at the High Peaks Resort to Mirror Lake Dr. Left on Northwood Rd. Left on Cobble Hill Rd. Left on Rt. 86 to Wilmington. Straight through the intersection on Bonnieview Rd. (County Rt. 19). Right on Silver Lake Rd. and follow detour arrows to Au Sable Forks. Expect delays in the Village of Lake Placid and in Wilmington from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Black Brook to Wilmington and Jay: From Silver Lake Rd., take Bonnieview Rd. turning left at Rt. 86 (4 corners) in Wilmington. Haselton Rd. will close from Bilhuber Rd. to Rt. 86.

Ironman Lake Placid has established a community relations coordinator and hotline to assist businesses and community members with questions related to race training and travel throughout the region, along with addressing specific race-day issues.

The community liaison is the primary point of contact regarding road closures, traffic delays, and other inquiries or concerns. Working with race officials and other local agencies will allow them to quickly mitigate any issues that arise.
