Unitary America volunteers are impacting the North Country

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Unitary America, a locally-based, community advocacy non-profit organization, with over 35 volunteers, helped remove approximately 100 pounds of garbage from downtown Plattsburgh over the past two weeks, cleaning an area stretching across the entire downtown area. Volunteers helped clean Betty Little Park, Margaret Street, MacDonough Monument, Trinity Park, Durkee Street, Clinton Street, Brinkerhoff, and Court Street.

This trash cleanups were part of Unitary America’s program Clean America, which has cumulatively removed over one ton from the local area. Past trash cleanups have targeted the Saranac River, and other ecologically-sensitive areas. “It is really amazing to see our volunteers removing this much garbage from our communities. If we were not there, then this garbage would’ve leaked pollutants that undermine our drinking water and harm our local environment,” says Garrett Monette, Leader of Unitary America. The organization plans to hold several more trash cleanups before the onset of winter.

Single-use plastics are known to degrade into billions of microplastics, whereas cigarette butts can pollute drinking water, and leach pollutants into the soil. “I really admire how dedicated our volunteers are, and the level of support we’ve seen from our community. I couldn’t have done any of this without all the amazing people that make up Unitary America,” Monette added. The organization has another trash cleanup planned on October 10th, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, at Trinity Park in downtown Plattsburgh. All community members and college students alike are welcome.
