Reacting to Vermont school hacking incident Peru Central District Superintendent Scott Storms issues statement regarding Peru’s multi-layered cybersecurity strategy
October 6, 2026 – While we cannot comment on the specific security protocols or incidents of other school districts, our community should know that safeguarding student, staff, and district data is an absolute priority. We employ a proactive, multi-layered cybersecurity strategy designed to defend against modern threats like ransomware and data breaches.
Key safeguards we currently have in place include:
- Identity Protection & Access Control: We enforce Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) across all staff accounts. MFA is one of the single most effective barriers against unauthorized access, even if a user’s password becomes compromised.
- 24/7 Security Operations & Incident Response: We partner with Arctic Wolf, a leading Managed Detection and Response (MDR) provider, to monitor our network and environment around the clock for suspicious activity or abnormal traffic.
- Advanced Endpoint Protection: We deploy SentinelOne across district devices. This endpoint detection system uses automated artificial intelligence to detect, block, and isolate malicious code or unauthorized ransomware activity in real time at the device level.
- Human Firewalls & Training: Technical tools are only part of the defense. Our staff undergo annual cybersecurity awareness training to recognize phishing, social engineering, and potential threat tactics before an attacker can gain a foothold.
Cybersecurity is a continuously evolving landscape, particularly for public institutions. We regularly review, test, and update our defenses alongside our cybersecurity partners to ensure our security posture remains as strong as possible.
