Town Board passes local law permitting town to exceed tax levy limit
By John T. Ryan
Peru, NY, the Peru Town Board held a 6 PM regular meeting on Monday, September 28, 2026, immediately following a 5:45 PM Public Hearing where the public had the opportunity to comment on the town’s anticipated 2027 budget exceeding the state-imposed 2% tax levy increase limit. At this meeting, the board adopted Local Law #2 authorizing the town to exceed the limit.
After a 25-minute Executive Session, the board passed a resolution authorizing compensation for Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) Duane Bibeau for Emergency Fire Code Enforcement call-outs during off-hours. Bibeau will also receive mileage reimbursement for travel between his home and the Peru Town Hall and will be paid for a minimum of three hours at the same rate as other employees.
The board accepted $20,000 from the NYS Environmental Facilities Corporation Secure Grant Program to assess and strengthen its informational and operational cybersecurity systems. No matching funds are required.
The Zoning Law legal issues between the Town of Peru and Lighthouse Apartments LLC/Corey Trombley continue. The Town responded to a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request from Trombley’s attorney. At this meeting, the Town granted Trombley’s counsel 30 extra days to review the FOIL materials. The issue is on the Zoning Board’s October 21 agenda.
