Adirondack Ladies climb the Santanoni Range

John T. Ryan

The Santanoni Mountain Range is located in Essex County just outside of Newcomb. Its three principal peaks are Santanoni, Panther and Couchsachagra (pronounced KooK-sa-KRA-ga). All three of these peaks are mountains of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks. Colleen Kaulfuss from Cadyville and Lori Clark and Jean Ryan of Peru climbed these peaks on Saturday, February 28th. It was a beauitiful, cloudless winter day which offered the hikers the opportunity to relish the beautiful Adirondack vistas. They started their hike at 7 a.m. and completed the hike twelve hours later. One of their photographs shows the Tahawas mines as seen from the distant mountain tops. Titanium was extracted from these mines for many years. (Joanne Kennedy, the fourth “Adirondack Lady,” started the climb but returned home with a flu-like bug. She insisted that her friends continue their trek.)
