Lake Champlain is at lowest level in 75 years

August 25, 2025 MYNBC5 Facebook Post – Notice the low Lake Champlain water level this past weekend? It is now the lowest for this point in August since 1950, a whopping 75 years ago. Showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon

Showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon as a surface trough drags a boundary across the region. Showers will develop off the Greens around noon and slowly drift eastward across Vermont with additional chances in northern New York and the Champlain Valley. The main concern will be heavy rain and localized flash flooding.

Batten down the hatches! We will see some widespread gusty winds materialize around daybreak on Friday and continue into the early afternoon. West winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph could cause minor tree damage and/or scattered power outages.

Warm to hot temperatures and muggy conditions will help increase the risk of isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms. The main time window will be between 2 PM and 8 PM. Storms could produce a variety of weather hazards today. After the front, gusts up to 35 mph are possible.

Our warm weather streak is over for awhile. Rain showers remain in the forecast, but no thunderstorms are expected today.\n\nYesterday, Montpelier and Plattsburgh broke daily record precipitation amounts of 1.86″ (besting 1.11″ in 1970) and 1.47″ (besting 0.83″ of 2014).

NWS Burlington – 6AM – 5/9/25  Rain has begun to overspread the region this morning with rain likely to linger well into Saturday for many locations. A flood watch remains in effect for portions of central and southern Vermont into Saturday with the main focus on poor drainage, urban, and nuisance flooding.

So, it is not your imagination that it has been consistently wet every weekend recently.
