Animals lost homes in flood and Elmore SPCA comes to the rescue

Kc Mace holds three of the kittens looking for adoptive homes

Kc Mace holds three of the kittens looking for adoptive homes

May has been a very busy month for Elmore SPCA Executive Director Kc Mace. Along with her SPCA responsibilities she has also been co-managing the flood victim temporary relief shelter at the Crete Center. When people were forced to evacuate the Lakeside Apartments in Plattsburgh, they came with some thirty dogs, sixty cats and an assortment of other animals. Many of the animals were brought to the Elmore SPCA and some had to be abandoned at the SPCA when the owners could not find housing where animals would be accepted.

The surrendered animals include three dogs (a Puggle, a Jack Russell Terrier and an American Bull Terrier) and ten cats, one of which is a cat with her three kittens. Other surrendered animals are a ferret, two rabbits, fourteen parakeets and a cockatiel.

Kc Mace said, “We’re probably going to have about $3,000 in medical bills for the rescued animals. Many of the animals needed examination, medication and vaccinations.” She said donations are needed to cover these costs. They can be mailed to Elmore SPCA, 510 Arthur Rd., Peru, NY 12972.

County Animal Rescue Teams are being formed in response to a federal law passed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. It mandated that states and counties provide for companion animals in disaster situations. Kc Mace explained, “We’ve received two grants to purchase crates and other necessary things. We’re in the process of getting the crates.” Volunteers are needed to help implement the rescue program. Mace said, “We need clerical support and people to work directly with the animals. All the volunteers will be properly trained. Online training is available.” Anyone who would like to become a volunteer can call Kc Mace at the Elmore SPCA at 643-2451.
