The Peru Lions Club will be hosting its 17^th Annual Stanley Hughes Golf Classic on Sunday, September 11^th at The Barracks Golf and Country Club at 12:00 p.m. The tournament is a four-person scramble with a team handicap of 40+.  Cash prizes are awarded for 1^st,  2^nd and 3^rd places.  There will also be prizes for closest to the pin and closest to the line.  A buffet dinner will follow the round.  Cost is $65 per person.  Barracks members are $35.

PLATTSBURGH – Congressman Bill Owens today announced a secretarial disaster designation for Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Oswego, Oneida and Lewis counties.  The designation from USDA immediately triggers the availability of low-interest emergency loans from the Farm Services Agency (FSA) and the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Program (SURE) to eligible agricultural producers in all primary and contiguous counties to help them recover from production and physical losses.  Physical losses include, but are not limited to, dead livestock and collapsed buildings.  Read more »

The Town of Peru Concert Series continues on Sunday, August 21st with the music of Towne Meeting. Towne Meeting is a 5-member band with powerful vocal harmonies. Their musical roots are in folk but the band branches out into many other genres, from acoustic rock to country.  Formed in Plattsburgh, NY, in 2006, the band has gained a following throughout northern New York, as well as the capital region and northern Vermont. The concerts are free and begin at 6 p.m. at the Little Ausable River Park Gazebo in the center of Peru.

VIOLATION NOTICE

The Town of Peru has to sample quarterly for total trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids to comply with the disinfection by-products rule for E.P.A. and New York State.

Test results for the 2^nd quarter of 2011 exceeded the allowable maximum contaminant levels.   Results are calculated by averaging the previous 4 quarters’ results.  The current results represent the average of the 3^rd & 4^th quarters of 2010 and 1^st & 2^nd quarter of 2011. Read more »

The Peru Town Board held their regular meeting on Monday, August 8. Everyone except Town Councilor Sue Polhemus (excused) was present.

The School Street sidewalk received final approval by D.O.T. clearing the way for the town to take ownership. The sidewalk was completed almost a year ago but was not accepted by the town because of D.O.T. concerns about the process by which the sidewalk was constructed. This prevented the town from maintaining or removing snow from the sidewalk. Several core samples were required to determine the sidewalk’s integrity.

The Board passed a resolution to set up easements for a drainage system on Spitfire Drive. For several months residents on Spitfire Drive have expressed concerns about the flooding along the drive. Along with drainage ditches to the lake, a privately owned culvert will need to be lowered by a foot. This work will begin as soon as the easements are established.

In other action the Board:

• Was informed by W/S Superintendent Greg Timmons that the water tower needs its bi-annual inspection. The inspection involves placing a submersible robot into the tank to check welds and the overall condition of the tank’s interior. The inspection is performed by Pittsburgh Tank and costs $1,750.00. A resolution for the inspection was approved.
• Transferred $125,000 in funds from the Highway Unappropriated Fund to several highway lines to cover costs related to excess snow removal, road damage due to the spring flooding, and several equipment breakdowns. Town Councilor Kregg Bruno inquired about FEMA assistance with the road damage due to flooding. Town Supervisor Peter Glushko informed the board that FEMA might be able to help, but that it is a slow process that could take months.
• Continued a discussion on the vandalism under the Main Street Bridge. The installation of flood lights is planned by summer’s end.
• Reported that the Records Management Project is completed.
• Accepted department reports and approved minutes for 7/11/11 & 7/25/11 which and can be found at http://www.perutown.com/town.htm.
