Northern New York –  “Food is fun and the ‘All About Vegetables’ workshops are a great way for people to learn easy, fun, new methods of cooking to keep and enhance the flavors of our locally-grown foods,” says Chef Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy, a Culinary Institute of America graduate with experience as a chef in Germany, Florida, Texas, and Virginia and locally at The Point and The Lake Placid Lodge, is one of three regional chefs/restaurateurs teaching the 6-9 Eating Local Yet? Vegetables workshops. He is now among the School of Hospitality, Resort and Culinary Management faculty at Paul Smith’s College of the Adirondacks.

McCarthy will be instructing the public workshop participants Wednesday, June 30 in Plattsburgh, NY, at the CV-TEC Culinary Kitchen. Read more »

WASHINGTON – Representatives Bill Owens (D-NY) and Chris Gibson (R-NY) today introduced an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations Act (H.R. 2112) that would restore funding to the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Broadband Loan and Loan Guarantee program.  Funding for the program would allow municipalities and organizations located in underserved, rural areas to secure funds for the costs of the construction, improvement, and acquisition of facilities and equipment for broadband service.  The bipartisan amendment to restore modest funding to the RUS loan program is supported by the American Farm Bureau, the New York State Farm Bureau, the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association, the Western Telecommunications Alliance, and the Business Council of New York State. The amendment passed today by a vote of 221-198. Read more »

This past Sunday a special service was celebrated at the Peru Community Church to commemorate the building of the first Methodist Church in Peru and celebrate 200 years of Methodism in Peru. Both the Methodist and Congregational/Presbyterian Churches began their meetings in Peru in the early 1800s in the village. The Methodist Church was built in 1811 and the Congregational Church in 1833. In 1937 “two young laymen, one a member of the Methodist Church in Peru and the other a member of the Presbyterian Church in Peru were playing tennis on the community courts. They….. agreed that one strong Protestant Church in the village could better serve the people than two smaller and necessarily weaker ones.” For a period both church buildings were used alternatively. However, the Methodist Church was found to be unsafe in 1943, was sold in 1947 and raised in 1957. The Peru Community Church was incorporated in 1944. Three preachers led the service. From left to right, current pastor Rev. Dr. Robert Svenson; his brother Rev. David Svenson, the guest Methodist preacher for the service; and former pastor Rev. Dr. Ken Parker, who was the minister of the Church for over 30 years.

The choir, conducted by Carol Gallagher, did an especially nice job on the anthem “Blow Ye the Trumpet, Blow”, with Carol playing the trumpet. There was lots of red to celebrate Pentecost Sunday. In the Fellowship Center a Silver Tea Reception followed the service, sponsored by the Ladies Guild.

This Saturday the After Thoughts will be performing to help raise funds for a good cause. They’ll present a great mix of songs with everything from Broadway, to popular, to folk songs. There will be something for every taste. The concert will be held at St. John The Baptist Church, 1804 Route 22 in Keeseville, Saturday, June 18^th, at 7:30 p.m. There’s no admission charge, just a free will offering to benefit the library. For more information call the Keeseville Free Library at 834-9054.

Summer workshops in Canton, Plattsburgh and Sackets Harbor will offer cost-saving tips in hands-on classes with chefs, meat cutters, and nutrition educators. The 6-9pm workshops will be held:

– June 22 in Canton at the 1st Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, and
