Election 2010 will be important and interesting

By John T. Ryan

Election Day is on Tuesday, November 2, 2010. As usual, Peru voters will be voting at the St. Augustine’s Parish Center, 3030 Main St. There are 4,232 registered voters in Peru. 359 votes were cast in the September 14th primary elections. That’s only 8.5% of the registered voters, but in line with other Clinton County communities.

The final vote count in Peru for the Douglas Hoffman vs. Matt Doheny Congressional primary contest was 186 votes for Hoffman and 84 for Doheny. Peru voters followed the Clinton County trend favoring the more Conservative Hoffman and rejecting the candidate favored by party leaders. Some Hoffman supporters have stated that will vote for Owens. They despise Doheny and they want to teach party leaders a lesson.

Voters will be using the new electronic voting machines. While local election officials reported no major problems with the machines in the primaries the general election ballot may be confusing for some people. There are eleven candidates for governor meaning some candidates will appear on a second ballot line. Parties such as the Green Party, the Anti-Prohibition and the Rent Is Too Damned High Party have places on the ballot.

Owens announces lending for upstate small business to expand and rehire

Congressman Owens News Release

PLATTSBURGH – Today, Congressman Bill Owens announced that $55 million is being allocated for small business loans for New York job creators.  The funding is provided through the recently passed Small Business Jobs Act (H.R. 5297), which was supported by Owens in September. States are required to demonstrate a minimum of $10 in new private lending for every $1 in federal funding. Accordingly, the $55 million investment from the federal government is expected to support more than $550 million in additional private lending for New York State. Read more »

How to spend an interesting few hours next weekend

By John T. Ryan

Anyone interested in local history will be treated to a very special event on Friday, October 22nd and Saturday October 23rd. Lincoln and Ann Sunderland will be opening their home for guided tours. It’s an opportunity that won’t happen again for a long time, if ever. Known as the Keese Homestead, the home has close connections to Peru’s early Quaker settlement. Richard Keese, for whom Keeseville was named, settled at the home’s location in the 1790s. His son Peter built the home in 1837. There is evidence that Peter Keese was involved in the Underground Railroad and the house may have been used as a station to conceal slaves on their way to Canada.

Tours will be conducted from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. The cost is $5.00 per person; children 6 and under will be admitted free of charge. There will also be a Chinese auction. All proceeds will go to the Peru Community Church Ladies Guild to benefit the varied programs they support. Free cider and snacks will be served after the tour.

Directions:
Take exit 35 off Interstate 87.  Turn west (toward Peru) on Rt 442 (Bear Swamp Rd).  At the T where Bear Swamp meets Rt 22, turn Left (south). Drive about 3 miles.  turn Right on Arthur Rd.  Drive 1 mile, turn Right on Union Rd.  Drive 500 ft, turn Left on Harkness Rd.  The big stone house on the corner of Union Rd and Harkness Rd is the Keese Homestead.
