Drivers wanted – Here’s your chance to provide a valuable public service

The Joint Council of Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties (JECO) needs more drivers in Peru to transport local people to medical appointments. The people being transported are either aging or disabled and have no transportation of their own. This is a much needed service. It’s a chance to help your neighbors and to make new friends. You would have flexible hours and be paid at the rate of $.42 per mile.  Call 561-6310 for more information.

Churches unite during Walk of Faith

By John T. Ryan

Peru’s Annual Walk of Faith was held on Sunday, October 3rd with eighty-six members of the St. Augustine’s Church and the Peru Community Church participating.  Christa Reyell, Regent of the Catholic Daughters of Americas which sponsors the Walk said, “We had a beautiful day and raised over $600 that will be divided between the Peru Community Church’s Jamaica Project and the North Country Mission of Hope.” Reyell was very pleased with the day’s joyous atmosphere saying, “The Peru community is filled with so many wonderful people. It was so great to see everyone come together.”

A prayer service led by Reverend Alan Shnob and Reverend Robert Svenson was conducted before the Walk began. James Carlin of the North Country Mission of Hope and George Burrell of the Jamaica Project thanked everyone present for their support. Reverend Oliver Daley, Pastor of the Jamaican Church which coordinates the Jamaican Project invited members of St. Augustine’s Church to get involved with the Jamaica Project. Every January about two dozen Peru Community Church volunteers travel to Jamaica where they construct a home and assist in other community-service projects.

Christa Reyell thanked the many people responsible for the day’s success. She said the Walk of Faith would not have been possible without our Walk of Faith Planning Committee (Fr. Alan Shnob, Vikki and Ken Defayette, Theresa and John Guynup, Karen and Pete Glusko, Julie and Gary Liberty) and all the help of our Walk of Faith volunteers (The Knights of Columbus Council 7273, music provided by Adam Blaine: our Guest Speakers, Peru Emergency Medical Team, Lynn and Ann Wilkie,  Thomas Reyell (filling in whereever I need), Norman Torrance (crossing guard), Don McBrayer for our microphone sound system, as well as our area businesses who donated items for our Walk: Forrence’s for the apples, Adirondack Coffee Roasters for the coffee, and Frosty Springs Bottling Company for the water).

A beautiful autumn afternoon in and around Peru

The Town of Peru and nearby towns are a beautiful place to live anytime, but especially in autumn.  Today the Ausable River was raging following the recent rains; hence, Ausable Chasm was absolutely beautiful. Sullivan Orchard’s huge pumpkin patch on the corner of the Davern Road and Route 22 was being enjoyed by passersby and visitors alike. Jim and Melvin Irwin were picking apples in their River Rd. orchard within sight of the Peru School. Forrence Orchard’s 200+ pickers were at work and haulers were transporting apples to the River Road warehouse. The Peru Fire Department was hosting a wonderful children’s day. Young children climbed up in the trucks, watched the demonstrations and enjoyed all the free food. Although The Peru Gazette didn’t have the time to visit Rulf’s Orchard we’re sure they were jammed with customers. Apple Jack’s on the Brand Hollow Rd. was very busy with families and children picking their own apples and enjoying a wonderful fall afternoon together.
