Don Evans has experienced a close-up look at every Clinton County highway and waterway

By John T. Ryan

Most people in Peru have probably seen Don Evans either bicycling through town or driving through town with his kayak atop his Subaru Forester and a bicycle resting on the tailgate carrier. Few people know about the recent accomplishment of the retired Peru Central Spanish teacher. On July 22nd Don accomplished a personal goal to ride his bike the length of every Clinton County highway and to paddle his kayak on all the County’s navigable waterways.

Evans has been riding a bike since moving to Peru forty years ago. He said, “I started riding my bike to my kids’ soccer games. I have ridden to every place where they had a soccer game.” Evans said he never really thought about riding all the county’s highways until two years ago when he asked himself, “What can I do that  no one’s ever done before?” Last summer when it appeared that he might require knee replacement surgery at some future date he decided to complete his goal by the end of this summer. At that point he had biked about 50% of the county’s highways. Over the past several months Evans often launched his kayak at a boat launch, paddled fourteen or fifteen miles and then rode his bike on a couple of nearby roads. Read more »

School Street sidewalk construction contract will be awarded this month

By John T. Ryan

The Peru Town Board meeting of July 26, 2010 had a seventeen item agenda. The Board:

  • Set August 31, 2010 at 10 a.m. as a bid opening date for the School Street sidewalk construction contract. A change in engineering plans required redelivery of bids.
  • Will review copier information submitted by three suppliers and plans to reach a purchase decision at its August 9th meeting. The copier will cost under $10,000.
  • Set August 18th as the date for a noise ordnance/sidewalk ordinance workshop. Responsibility for sidewalk maintenance, noise complaints and decibel standards are primary issues.
  • Passed a resolution to purchase a fire alarm system for the town hall. A security protection system will not be purchased at this time.
  • Will review insurance on the Heyworth/Mason Park building. Supervisor Glushko will research town insurance policies to ensure that the building is appropriately covered.
  • Will be looking into furnishing a port-a-potty at the Little AuSable River Park Gazebo. Sunday night concert-goers have asked why one is not available. Supervisor Glushko expressed concern over possible vandalism to any port-a-potty being placed at this site.
  • Conducted an Executive Session for personnel issues.
