The 20th Annual Run For Jon on August 28th was a tremendous success with some 300 participants and $5,700 raised to support families with medical emergencies.  Forrence’s orchard with its apples ready for harvest was a beautiful setting. Don and Shirley Evans expressed their thanks to everyone who played a role in the run’s success. Shirley said, “As always we had tremendous help and support from family, friends and neighbors – what we call The Run For Jon Family.”  Don and Shirley’s daughter Johanna surprised her parents when she flew in from South Carolina. (See attached photos taken by Jaimie Devan Dowler). Mark Elmore returned to Peru for the run.  Elmore and Scott Woodward organized the first run to assist the Evans family with expenses they were incurring caring for their thirteen old son Jon who was battling cancer. When Jon passed away the Evans family and friends continued the run to memorize Jon and to give the event’s proceeds to families facing medical problems. Over the years about $50,000 has been raised with more than one-half of the amount distributed to local families. Read more »

If you know any of the people in the accompanying photos (Click here) (photos are largest in Slideshow format) you’ll find it hard to believe that they graduated from Peru High School fifty years ago. The Class of 1960 held its 50^th Reunion this past weekend. They gathered at the North Country Club for pizza on Friday night. On Saturday night they enjoyed dinner and reminisces at the Keeseville Elks Club. The class had 60 graduates. Forty-four classmates, spouses and guests attended Saturday’s dinner. One the most memorable aspects of the weekend was the class’s donation of $1,300 to the Leo Bourgois Scholarship Fund. Bourgois was their class advisor and the class dedicated their yearbook to him. Mr. “B” as he was affectionately known passed away on December 28, 2009.

The class was also honored by the presence of teachers Betty Hughes, John and Shirley Longware, Lucille Pascal and her husband Larry, Clare Rooney who was celebrating her 97^th birthday and Mike Zerrahn. Read more »

Clinton County sales of existing single family homes declined by 11.9% in July 2010 compared to July 2009 according to figures compiled by the NYS Association of Realtors. Median prices declined by 16.9%.

Beginning July 23^rd Peru residents traveling by Forrence Orchard’s River Road warehouse noticed piles of sand being dumped along the warehouse’s east side and many wondered what was happening. Four weeks later passersby can easily see that the warehouse is undergoing a major expansion. In fact Forrence’s are constructing a 60 ft. x 195 ft. or almost 12,000 square foot addition which will house a new apple packing line. They hope to be operating by the end of October. David Gordon is the general contractor.

Seth Forrence said his family is investing in the future. He explained, “The new packing machine will be more adapted to packing larger apples such as Cortland and Honeycrisp. It still can pack Macs, but we’ll be able to pack various varieties and have them immediately ready for the marketplace.” While all apples leave Forrence’s by the tractor-trailer load, one truck may contain several varieties. The new machine will easily pack three pallets of one variety, five pallets of another variety, etc. Forrence said he anticipated having to hire more packing personnel saying, “We hope to stimulate jobs in the local economy.” Forrence’s Route 22 packing house will continue in full operation.

Forrence Orchards harvests between 500,000 and 600,000 bushels of apples annually on their 1200 acre farm. That’s between 20 and 24 million pounds of apples or between 500 and 600 forty-foot tractor trailer loads. Their primary varieties are McIntosh, Honeycrisp and Cortland. Two hundred and five Jamaican men are arriving over the next few days to pick Forrence Orchard’s 2010 crop. Seth Forrence says, “The crop isn’t as large as last year’s, but it’s a very nice crop.”
