Fire Department replaces twenty-two year old pumper

The Peru Volunteer Fire Department upgraded a major piece of equipment on March 6, 2010 when its new American LaFrance pumper arrived. Chief Brian Westover said the pumper replaces a twenty-two year old Pierce Lance model. The American LaFrance will transport eight firefighters, carry 1000 gallons of water, pump 2,000 gallons of water a minute and features a compressed air foam system. The pumper cost just a little over $480,000. Westover said the department tries to replace its trucks after twenty years of use. The department’s two other pumpers are 1994 and 2001 models.

Board getting closer to South Acres decision

By Donald McBrayer

The second Public Hearing on the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) was held on Monday, March 22. This meeting was set up to address specific questions about the application of the grant to the South Acres Mobile Home Park’s sewer system upgrade.
Laura Oswald from the Laberge Group readdressed the particulars of the proposed grant, how it would be applied, and the conditions required for its approval. John Kanoza from the Health Department provided blueprints for the design of the proposed sewer systems.
The Board inquired as to why Tam Phung (the owner of South Acres) was not present. Oswald explained he was currently in California and proceeded to read an email from Mr. Phung with information from Champlain National Bank confirming the bank’s affirmation that if Mr. Phung is rewarded the $400,000 grant, Champlain National Bank would approve the balance of the funds needed for the sewer system upgrade. The total cost of the project could be as high as $700,000.
Oswald was asked if the Town was denied this grant would that impact the likelihood of being rewarded future grants. She indicated it could.
The application for the CDBG must be submitted by April 23. A final decision on applying for the grant will be on the March 22 agenda.
