The Peru Lions serve the community in many ways!

The Lions enjoy the "Adopt a Highway Program" on the Bear Swamp Rd.

By Ed Eisele

The Peru Lions Club consists of people who represent a cross section of our community. Chartered in 1945, the Peru Lions Club continues to serve the community in a variety of ways.  Monthly meetings provide a forum for club members, sometimes over dinner to discuss means for employing our motto:  “We Serve”.  Members have the opportunity to become active through a variety of roles ranging from leadership initiatives to hands-on service throughout the community.

Marjorie McCarty became the first female member of the Peru Lions Club starting a proud tradition of shared contributions by all.   Membership in the Lions Club is bestowed upon individuals who are sponsored by club members in good standing and have the qualities and dedication to provide contributions to the welfare of our community, both locally and globally.

The primary goal is to aid the visually impaired and blind.

·        Provide exams and eye glasses for children and adults in need of financial help

·        Lions Eye Institute in Albany support

Peru Lions contribute to service projects to assist others locally:

  • ·        Hospice of  the North Country
  • ·        Literacy Volunteers of  the North Country
  • ·        Habitat for Humanity
  • ·        Adopt-a-Highway
  • ·        CVPH
  • ·        Peru Youth Commission
  • ·        Scholarships for Peru students

  • ·        Stan Hughes Golf Tournament
  • ·        Election Day Spaghetti Dinner
  • ·        Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot
  • ·        Springtime Pancake Breakfast
  • ·        Annual White Cane Day

The community is invited to view Lions in action. Our next function is The John Adams Memorial Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, 7:30 at the Peru School . Whether you participate or are interested in Lionism, please stop by.

(Click here to see several more photos of Keeseville’s Veterans Memorial Park Dedication) It was very quiet in Peru this Veterans Day so the Gazette traveled to Keeseville where several hundred people turned out for the dedication of that community’s Veterans Memorial Park. The park is located at the corner of Route 9 and Route 22 in the center of the village, and its centerpiece is a beautiful granite monument with an inscription which reads, “Our community honors the courage, sacrifice and devotion of its veterans.”

Keeseville resident George Moore was the major force in the park’s formation. Moore purchased the property, turned it over to the Village of Keeseville and hired Vermont sculptor Jerry Williams to sculpt the beautiful monument. Moore told the crowd that a similar ceremony was held on this property in 1942 when 4,000 to 5,000 people turned out to honor the 142 men and women from the towns of Keeseville and Chesterfield who were serving in World War II. Following the war, the land was used as an insurance office and Moore said he always wanted to see it return to being a place to honor the community’s veterans. Moore asked his grandson Troy Baraby to read the names of several of the Keeseville veterans who have served the nation in the wars since World War II.

Town of Chesterfield Town Supervisor Gerald Morrow was Master of Ceremonies for the dedication. The invocation was led by Pastor Richard Reese, Ned Hoey led the Veterans Prayer, Joanna D’Ascoli sang the national anthem and VFW Post 1505 Commander Ron Desautels read a poem dedicated to veterans. Tears were in the eyes of many onlookers as Desautels read. He also recognized other commanders: VFW Post 309 Commander Roy Soderberg, American Legion Post 504 Commander Jeff Hewston and Am Vets Post 87 Commander Gil Liberty.

Town Board Meeting report

By Donald McBrayer

The Regular Town Board Meeting was held on Monday, November 9th. The meeting was quick and uneventful. The agenda items included a motion to accept the “Safe Routes to School Contract”, which passed. This motion paves the way for sidewalk construction along the west side of School Street and will be 100% funded by grants. A motion to approve the 2010 Preliminary Budget also passed.

In Other Business Councilor Tom Powers requested a resolution on next month’s agenda to move $2,800 from the General Fund to be paid to Tom LaBombard to initiate paperwork on the Bear Swamp Road Water/Sewer Expansion Project.

Deputy Supervisor Cortland Forrence discussed options for the Town Hall ceiling including painting or possibly installing a drop ceiling. It was suggested this be done before the new carpet is installed. Mr. Forrence also indicated the newly elected Supervisor and Board Members could be certified by months end.

Public Comments: There was only one comment from Donald McBrayer who noted several issues with the current Town Hall building and asked if long term planning might be considered toward the construction of a new Town Hall. The meeting was adjourned at 7:55PM.
