Boxelder Bugs (they’re back!)

By Donald McBrayer

They are everywhere in Peru these days, like a red blanket caressing the trees, or piled high on aged house siding.

Say “Hi!” to the Boxelder Bug (Boisea Trivittata).  They love the sap of boxelder trees, but will also settle for maple and ash. This time of year they are seeking crevices to nestle in for a long winter’s nap. Any exposed wood in any sunny spot is too tempting to pass up for these little guys. They hit Peru hard a few years back, and can hang on for several seasons. Only a very cold winter keeps their numbers at bay (one more reason to like the snow).

Since they could be sticking around you might wanna know:

Are they dangerous?
The good news is they do little damage to plants, do not bore (like ants or termites). Boxelder bugs do not bite or sting, and do not carry any disease. Heck, they don’t even like human food. But, that’s little comfort when you see fifty-trillion of them on the side of the house. Read more »

Apple Valley Senior Housing benefits from Eagle Scout project

L-R Boy Scout Troop 49 Fred Tuller, Scout Master; Rob Bashaw, Mentor (Missing -Mentor Dana Bashaw); Wendi Cahill; Lincoln Cahill; Stephen Cahill; Tom Gwinn, Asst. Scout Master; Kathie Halaburda, Committee Member stand in front of the garage Troop 49 recently sided at Apple Valley Senior Housing

By John T. Ryan

Apple Valley Senior Housing in Peru has a newly sided storage garage thanks to the hard work of Lincoln Cahill and the scouts of Troop 49. Lincoln selected a siding project as his  Eagle Scout project and with the help of mentors Rob and Dana Bashaw and his fellow scouts the job has been completed.  Lincoln said, “Ron and Dana taught us about the various aspects of the job – how to estimate how many materials we would use, how to install the vinyl and about the expansion and contraction of vinyl siding.”  Lincoln said they did an accurate job estimating the materials needed because very few materials were left over when the two-week job was completed.  Trade terminology seemed to be second nature to Lincoln as he talked about vinyl “J-channels.” It was obvious Rob and Dana Bashaw had done their job well.

The Scouts of Troop 49

Lincoln Cahill is the son of Stephen and Wendi Cahill and is a senior at Peru High School. He has been involved with scouting since the first grade and hopes to go on to college next year with a major in civil engineering.  He still has two more merit badges to earn before being awarded the Eagle Scout Award.  He hopes to earn them by this November.

The primary is over – Here is your unofficial Peru ballot

By John T. Ryan

The Town of Peru’s 257 registered Independence Party members and 29 Conservative Party members were the only eligible voters in Tuesday’s primary elections, therefore a light turnout was expected and a light turnout it was. Only five Conservatives and twenty Independence Party members came to the polls. All the Independence Party voting was by write-in ballot. Absentee ballots, if any, have not been counted.  Here are the unofficial results. Read more »
