A detailed story will be published on Tuesday.

Our Town has two new historic markers

By John T. Ryan

Town of Peru Co-Historians Ron and Carol Allen led a joyous celebration Friday, August 7, 2009 on the occasion of the unveiling of the historical markers for historic Peru Landing and Port Jackson.  (See more photos) The unveiling took place on the site of the original Port Jackson – the Valcour Conference Center. New York State Assemblywoman Janet Dubrey, Quadricentennial Commission Vice-Chair Celine Paquette and Clinton County Historian Anastasia Pratt welcomed those present to the ceremonies.

Ron Allen said that Peru Landing is important in Peru’s history because it is the point where many of Peru’s first settler’s stepped foot on to the North Country soil. The landing was established by John Craig in 1787 and is located .3 miles north of the entrance of what is now Ausable Point State Park. Everett, Finch, Ketchum and Jackson are just a few of the families who arrived in Peru at Peru Landing. Unfortunately, the water wasn’t too deep at that point along Lake Champlain, so in 1820 Port Jackson was established 1.3 miles to the north at what is now known as the Valcour Conference Center. For the remainder of the 19th century Port Jackson was a departure and arrival point for passengers and goods. The North County’s products such as lumber and iron ore, potatoes and other agricultural goods were shipped from Port Jackson, down Lake Champlain into the Hudson River to New York City. The Laphams Mills Road was a direct route to the port.  In 1876 the railroad connected Plattsburgh and Albany and the steamship gradually declined as the preferred method of transporting goods.

Glushko will sign checks, but positions remain vacent

By Donald McBrayer

The Town Council held an Emergency Board Meeting on Monday August 3rd in order to authorize someone to sign upcoming payroll checks.
Counselor Tom Powers chaired the meeting and informed the public that no public input would be allowed.

Town Attorney Donald Biggs suggested someone be appointed for the purpose of signing checks. An appointment would only last until the next scheduled regular meeting on August 10th.
A motion was passed authorizing Pete Glushko to sign the payroll checks.

The topic of replacing the vacant Supervisor’s position was addressed.
Counselor Brandy McDonald expressed concern that if a replacement supervisor were to picked from the three remaining counselors, the required vote of three would be impossible because a councilor cannot vote for himself.  He suggested voting in a councilor first, filling the two-year vacancy left by Cortland Forrence, and then with four votes, voting in a replacement for the supervisor position. After a few minutes of discussion, the meeting was adjourned to executive session.
After roughly a half-hour the three councilors returned from executive session and the meeting was adjourned.  No indications of a decision or progress on a decision were expressed.

Graffiti on the Route 22 bridge adjacent to the Park Gazebo

By John T. Ryan

Counselor Peter Glushko chaired the Town Board meeting of Monday, July 27, 2009 in the absence of Town Supervisor Donald Covel.

Security at the Little Ausable River Park was one of the primary subjects of discussion.  The Town Council has asked Greg Timmons to investigate how much a surveillance system would cost. Over the past several months vandals have caused damaged to the gazebo’s electrical service, lattice work, railings, and playground equipment. There is  also a continuing problem with graffiti under the Route 22 bridge. Timmons has received one security system price and he will solicit several more. Read more »
