The Peru Town Board conducted a workshop and special meeting on Friday, July 17, 2009 at which time the counselors authorized the issuance of bonds not to exceed $110,000 to finance the acquisition and installation of new grinder pumps and an upgrade of control equipment for the Valcour Sewer District. Supervisor Donald Covel had previously estimated that the project would result in a tax increase from $.96/M to $1.37/M. He said the rate was $1.61/M when he took office. Water and Sewer Superintendent Greg Timmons said the exiting equipment was purchased in 1985 and requires considerable maintenance. The Valcour Sewer District serves thirty-nine customers.

The former Telegraph Street location of the Elmore SPCA

Although no exact time-frame has been established the Elmore SPCA recently outlined plans to the Town of Peru Zoning and Planning Boards to eventually move its facility back to the former 556 Telegraph Street location. In 2007 the Board determined that the Telegraph St. location could no longer serve the SPCA’s needs and in 2008 the facility was moved to 510 Arthur Rd. in Peru.  Now that a year has passed, the SPCA had to undertake some activity at the vacant Telegraph Street location or it would lose its non-conforming use status according to Peru’s zoning ordinance. SPCA Board member Carol Solari-Rusco said the facility’s garage will be razed this summer and the large hole in the back of the property will be filled in. Discussing the SPCA’s eventual return to Telegraph Street she said, “We will renovate and expand the facility and eventually move back. I don’t know if it will be next year. It’s got to be well thought out and well planned.” Solari-Rusco said, “We’re still in the talking stages. We’ll need to put together a capital fund project and we’ll be trying to form a steering committee.”

The improvements to be included in the renovated facility include expansion of the dog room and dog walking area, improvements to the septic, heating and electrical systems and improved parking. Phase two enhancements will include a cat housing area.

The Peru Town Board conducted its business meeting on Monday, July 13, 2009. The Board passed Local Law #6 regulating Outdoor Wood Boilers. The amended law will be published on the Town of Peru website in the very near future. Only minor changes were made to the law originally passed in September 2008. Read more »

Bernard Rock served the Peru Fire Department for over forty-five years including fifteen years as the Department Chief. Rock passed away on July 10th and today Peru firefighters honored their leader as he was laid to rest at St. Augustine’s Cemetery. See David Brown photos

The Elmore SPCA Board of Directors will host and dinner and auction in early October to raise money for our shelter.  Presently, we are seeking donations of collectibles and antiques for the auction which will be called by Frank Stefanick, auctioneer and author.   Please call Carol at 534-3484 or email carol@elmorespca.org.  if you have questions, or would like to contribute items for the auction.  Donations are tax deductible and all proceeds go to assist our many homeless pets.

It is at these meetings from now until election day that important decisions will be made and actions will be taken. Your input is needed. We are very fortunate that we have an excellent selection of candidates.  The best ever, we now must give them our full support. This is not the time to sit back and relax. It is at this meeting where we will have petitions to be signed allowing our candidates to be on a second line, the ”Independent Line” for the November election. Plan on attending and bring a Democratic friend.

Plattsburgh’s Bridge Street Dock was an exciting place this afternoon as participants in the FLW brought the day’s catch to shore. Pros are competing for a top award of $125,000 this week plus valuable points in the hope of qualifying for $2.5 million Forrest Wood Cup where they could win as much as $1 million. Anglers take off at 6:30 a.m. each day from Dock Street Landing. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins will be held at the Plattsburgh State Field House located at 167 Rugar Street in Plattsburgh, beginning at 4 p.m. More photos follow.  Read more »

Our condolences and prayers go out to the family and many friends of Bernard Rock  who has recently passed away. Bernard was a former two-term member of the Peru Town Council and  lifetime member of the Peru Fire Department, of which he was Chief for seventeen years. “Rocky” was a major influence in the start up of the ambulance services in Peru. Thank you for your many years of service to the Town of Peru.

Statistics released by the New York State Association of Realtors (NYSAR) indicate the existing single family home sales in Clinton County continue to decline compared to the previous year.  May sales in Essex County on the other hand increased by over 80% compared to 2008. The homes that are being sold in Clinton County appear to be in the lower price ranges with a May 2009 median price of $131,750 compared to a May 2008 median price of $154,100.  This is a trend that has been in place for several months.
