Good News from the Peru Lions Club

The Devins family did a great job on the River Rd.

Peru Lions Club members coordinated the program grom the firehouse.

The second annual Peru town-wide roadside Green Up Day was held on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd. It was a joint effort of the Peru Lions Club, the Peru K-5 PTO and the Peru Scouts. Over 70 participants combined to pick up 75 bags of trash. Additionally, ten bags of deposit bottles and cans were separated out and donated to the scouts. Over 20 miles of roadside was cleaned during the program.

We would like to acknowledge the support of Casella Waste Systems and Stewarts Shops. We also thank everyone who participated to make this a big success and help beautify the town and village of Peru.

Make Everyday Earth Day with a Green Cone Solar Digester

Clinton County, April 20, 2023. In recognition of Earth Day 2023, the Clinton County Health Department (CCHD) and Casella Waste Management at the Clinton County Solid Waste & Recycling Facility would like to remind residents that green cone solar digesters are available for purchase.

By using the sun’s energy and tapping into the surrounding micro-organisms, solar digesters provide a low-maintenance, space sensitive alternative to traditional food scraps recycling options, like composting. The solar-heated unit safely eliminates cooked and uncooked food waste, including items your backyard composter can’t handle such as meat, fish, bones, and dairy products. For more information visit www.greenconeusa.com.

“We were able to collect data from residents who purchased a green cone solar digester last year and learned that 100% of respondents felt the green cone solar digester was easy to use for all family members, including children,” states KayLeigh Raville, Supervising Public Health Educator at the Clinton County Health Department. She adds, “Over 80% of respondents reported the green cone solar digester met their expectations for a composting alternative and nearly all residents who were surveyed would recommend a digester to their friends and family.”

By purchasing a green cone solar digester you and your family can invest in our planet and celebrate Earth Day every day. Solar digesters are available for purchase at a reduced cost of $50 at the Schuyler Falls Convenience Station, 404 Sand Road, Morrisonville, NY 12962. All funds collected from the sale will be used to purchase additional digesters to sell to the public at the discounted rate.

Convenience Station hour are: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 9am – 4pm and Wednesdays and Fridays from 12pm to 4pm. Cash or personal checks will be accepted for payment.

Kristen Marino possesses coaching experience and appreciates the importance of youth sports

By John T Ryan

Peru – The Peru Town Board named Kristen Marino Peru Recreation Director at its April 10 meeting. Marino served as interim director since August 22 of last year. She brings a history of sports participation and leadership to the position.

Kristen grew up as a member of a U.S. Air Force family. She attended kindergarten in Peru but departed when USAF reassigned her dad. She returned to the area in 2000 when her husband Brian took a math teaching position at Peru High School. They lived in Plattsburgh for a few years before moving to Peru in 2006-07.

As a youth, Kristen participated in four high school sports, plus ballet. Working with Coach Joe Staves at Plattsburgh High School, she’s coached varsity track, modified gymnastics, modified softball, and modified track. In Peru, she’s coached modified gymnastics and assisted with the town’s girls’ soccer program. When her husband Brian was President of the Plattsburgh Little League, she was league secretary. Both she and Brian coached their girls’ teams when needed.

The Marinos have exposed their family to sports throughout their married life. Their four daughters are three-season athletes, all participating in many programs Kristen now leads. Kristen said, “That’s one of the reasons I’m interested in this position. I want to make sure the programs stay in place. I want these kids to get the same things that our kids did. I can’t imagine how our community could do without them.”

Brian’s sports involvement includes coaching JV boys’ soccer and baseball. He’s the current Peru varsity baseball coach, and when he’s not busy coaching, he officiates little league, boys and girls soccer, football, and boys and girls basketball. In addition, he’s been a Peru Youth Commission member and chairman.

Kristen earned a BA Degree in Political Science at SUNY Oswego and a Master’s Degree in Business at SUNY Plattsburgh. For the past five years,  she’s been a teacher’s assistant at Peru High School.

Asked if she’d like to see something added to the Youth Commission’s programs, Kristen mentioned pickleball’s growing popularity; she’d like Peru to establish a pickleball program. A few years ago, the town considered utilizing the Jenkins Street tennis courts for pickleball; however, the town board deemed the courts too expensive to repair. As a result, Marino is exploring alternative locations, including Sullivan Park.

“WHAT A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY WE LIVE IN”

Words preceding the paragraph below:
The Peru Exercise Group celebrated a lovely anniversary luncheon yesterday at Pasquale’s. We were awaiting our checks when the waitress came to tell us our lunches had been paid for by an anonymous Peru community individual(s). We were and are still quite overwhelmed by their generosity.

“The Peru Exercise Group (Americorps Seniors) would like to thank the anonymous individual(s) who paid for this group’s 25th-anniversary luncheon on Tuesday, April 18, at Pasquale’s in Peru. The members of this exercise group were and are still quite overwhelmed by this generosity. What a wonderful community we live in, and moments like this are quite humbling. Thank you, thank you!”
