Peru Lions honor Marge and Jim McCarty for their dedicated service

McCarty Memorial Bench

L-R Ann and John McCarty, Karen and Bob McCarty, Jim McCarty

The Lions and McCarty family members who were present to honor Marge and Jim

By John T. Ryan

Peru – On Sunday, July 3rd,  the Peru Lions Club dedicated the “McCarty Memorial Bench” at Heyworth-Mason Park.  The bench honors the late Marge and Jim McCarty for their long, dedicated service to the Peru Lions Club and the Peru community.  Members of the McCarty family were present to witness the dedication.

Current Lions Club President Ed Eisele delivered the following remarks.

It is fitting and proper that we are gathered here today for the dedication of the Jim & Marge McCarty memorial bench. Both Jim & Marge gave unselfishly to the Lions locally and throughout the entire Lions 20W district. They participated in virtually every Lions club activity.

The Peru Lions Club’s first female member, Marge’s duties included many club chair positions and committee seats. In addition, she was secretary, treasurer, president, board member, and she was the first female District Governor in 20W. She also served as district secretary under her husband Jim’s District Governor tenure.

Jim’s service also included a wide variety of club positions, including all that Marge accomplished but specifically as co-chair with Larry Ewald of the Peru Lions Club -John P Adams Memorial Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot for 20+ years. Jim, too was a District Governor. Together, he and Marge logged many miles and countless hours as they visited all the clubs in 20W, a huge district encompassing all the clubs between Champlain, Ticonderoga and Watertown.

So, I’m here to remind everyone that Marge and Jim McCarty embodied the Lion’s Club motto: “We Serve.”

STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ANNOUNCES NORTH COUNTRY PROJECT TO IMPROVE ACCESS FOR PEDESTRIANS WITH DISABILITIES

Includes 21 crossings along State Routes 22B and 442 in the hamlet of Peru in Clinton County

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez today announced that work will soon begin on a $1 million project that will provide sidewalk accessibility improvements at 70 pedestrian crossings in Jefferson, St. Lawrence, and Clinton County.

“Providing communities with compliant infrastructure reflects our commitment to a multi-modal, more accessible transportation network for all users,” said Commissioner Dominguez. “Projects like these allow everyone to enjoy and contribute to the richness of their communities using safe, accessible pedestrian facilities.”

The project will replace sidewalk ramps at intersections on State Highways in communities across Jefferson, St. Lawrence, and Clinton County. The new installations will provide ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The breakdown of planned work thus far is as follows:

  • 7 crossings along U.S. Route 11 in the hamlet of Mannsville in Jefferson County
  • 15 crossings along State Route 970L in the Village of Clayton in Jefferson County
  • 13 crossings along U.S. Route 11 and 11B in Potsdam and DeKalb in St. Lawrence County
  • 13 crossings along State Route 9 in the hamlet of Chazy in Clinton County
  • 21 crossings along State Routes 22B and 442 in the hamlet of Peru in Clinton County

Similar projects have been undertaken across New York State and continue to ensure that those with disabilities have safe and accessible pedestrian crossings on State Highways.

Through new projects and improvements to existing facilities, NYSDOT continues to address the ADA needs of its pedestrian network to provide safe, accessible facilities across the state. NYSDOT also looks for opportunities to fill existing gaps or enhance pedestrian access where appropriate.

Clinton County Historical Association presents: People of Color in Lake Champlain’s North Country

By Jacqueline Madison

President, North County Underground Railroad Historical Association

July 5th – 6:00 pm

House of Prayer, 63 Broad Street, Plattsburgh

To quote our speaker: “We tend to focus on African Americans coming through this area heading to Canada for freedom.  But some blacks came to the area who were free or stayed in the area for some unknown reason.  They were individuals who were entrepreneurs, sports players, devoted Christians, farmers, skilled laborers and made this region of New York their home.  While many made positive moves during their stay here, there were individuals who did things that put them in prison.  These men and women did some extraordinary things in a time when many in their culture were struggling to survive.  My stories will introduce you to some of them today.”

Please join us at 6 pm at the House of Prayer, 63 Broad Street, Plattsburgh. The program is free and open to the public with donations appreciated.

NNYADP Super Fruits and Veg Research on Open House Tour July 7

Willsboro, New York.  The latest results of “super fruits” and vegetable production research from the farmer-driven Northern New York Agricultural Development Program (NNYADP) will be featured on the Thursday, July 7, 2022 Open House Tour at the Willsboro Research Farm in Willsboro, New York. The tour will leave the main office at 48 Sayward Lane at 2 p.m. Arrivals welcome at 1:30 p.m. All activities are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the farm at 518-963-7492.

One stop on the tour will be the Juneberry (amelanchier) nursery established with support from the NNYADP with both wild-cut and commercial varieties of a fruit noted for its high-antioxidant and nutritional value. Juneberry was the first in a line of now-four “super fruits” under evaluation with grants from the NNYADP. The open house tour will also provide an update on honeyberry and Aronia research plantings at the farm. Elderberry trials have just recently been established there.

The results of NNYADP research focused on opportunities to extend northern New York’s cooler spring and winter season growing and sales opportunities will be featured with a focus on the 2021 trials of early spring sprouting broccoli and tender miniature cabbages and an investigation into the potential to grow winter broccoli.

Farm Manager Michael H. Davis, Ph.D., will be joined by colleagues to also present information on soil health, corn grain and corn silage varieties, strawberry growing systems, a canopy-sensing robot, cover crops, alternative to neonic seed treatments, male sterile forage sorghum, and growing winter triticale and winter rye for forage and grain.

The 352-acre Willsboro Research Farm was a gift to Cornell University by E. Vreeland Baker in 1982. The farm is operated as a Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station and has hosted numerous projects for the NNYADP.

Funding for the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program is supported by the New York State Legislature through the New York State Assembly and administered by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.
