LCBP Hosting Patrick Leahy Photo Contest
Grand Isle, VT – In recognition of Senator Patrick Leahy’s long-standing commitment to Lake Champlain and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, the LCBP is holding the Patrick Leahy Lake Champlain Basin Photo Contest.
The LCBP will accept photo submissions in four categories that correspond to the four management goals of Opportunities for Action: Clean Water, Healthy Ecosystems, Thriving Communities, and Informed and Involved Public.
Photos may be submitted on Twitter, Instagram, or using the submission form on the LCBP website.
“Lake Champlain has long been one of my favorite subjects to photograph, as I know it is for many Vermonters. As honored as I am to have this contest named after me, I’m even more excited to see the undoubtedly wonderful entries the basin program will receive showing not only the lake itself, but the people and wildlife which call the Lake Champlain Basin home.”
“There are so many talented photographers of all skill levels in the Lake Champlain Basin. We are excited to see how people express their shared love of the Lake with one of the most accessible and engaging creative outlets we have,” said Dr. Eric Howe, Director of the Lake Champlain Basin Program.
The LCBP anticipates awarding prizes for first, second, and third place for submissions across all categories. In addition, a prize will be awarded for each of the four goal categories. Prizes will include an afternoon cruise on Lake Champlain with Sail Vermont, a workshop with Adirondack photographer Carl Heilman, and photography equipment gift cards.
Senator Leahy is expected to announce prize winners at a Clean Water Act anniversary event on October 8 in Burlington, Vermont. Select photos will be featured in an exhibit at the event. Entries may be used by the LCBP and partners in future lake-related digital and print publications and outreach materials.
All photos must be submitted by 11:59pm September 28, 2022 for consideration. Full contest rules, a submission form, and a gallery of submissions are available at lcbp.org/photo-contest.

Peru’s history on display at Heyworth Mason Park

Peru – Most Peru residents love expansive Heyworth Mason Park with its walking trail, dog park, town market, stage, bell tower, and Sunday evening concerts. But, over the past several days, people have noticed another upgrade. Paintings depicting Peru’s history have replaced the deteriorating plywood in the historic Heyworth building. As a result, the 1830s-era woolen-starch mill is becoming an even greater attraction.
Town Councilman Mel Irwin got the ball rolling. He explained, “I got tired of looking at old plywood. We should have fixed it a long time ago.” So Irwin contacted several community-minded people who agreed to sponsor paintings depicting Peru’s history, and the town is installing new plywood.
The images, created by artist Greg Badger, cost $200 each. When Badger finishes his artwork, Irwin brings them home, where he applies a weather-sun protective coating before he installs them. Altogether there are twenty window openings; to date, ten people sponsored paintings.

The judging is complete at the 55th annual World Dairy Expo, once again Stewart’s Shops has some of the best dairy products in North America. The judging is based on flavor, body and texture, melting quality, appearance and color.
Stewart’s Shops had a total of four ice cream winners at the competition, one first place winner, a second-place finish, as well as two third place finishes. This year’s competition received over 1,400 submissions from dairy producers across North America.
Stewart’s Shops officially has the best peanut butter ice cream in North America, Stewart’s Peanut Butter Pandemonium Ice Cream was the winner in the Peanut Butter Ice Cream category. It is also the top-selling flavor at Stewart’s Shops.
Stewart’s Shops Mint Cookie Crumble is a customer favorite, it took second place in mint category.
The two third place finishes were in the frozen dessert division—Mango Dragon Fruit in the sherbet category, Salty Caramel in the gelato category.
All of Stewart’s Shops dairy products are made fresh at their plant in Greenfield, New York with milk picked up from 20 local family dairy farms.
