Peru teacher Leif Sorgule awarded $50,000 National Teaching Prize

Peru Oct. 4, 2022 – Students filled the Peru High School Auditorium this morning for a surprise presentation. Harbor Freight Tools For Schools named Peru High School technology teacher Leif Sorgule a $50,000 National Teaching Prize winner. Sorgule is one of only twenty teachers nationwide receiving the award. As a result, Peru High School’s trades program will receive $35,000, and Sorgule will receive $15,000. In total, Harbor Freight Tools For Schools is awarding $1.25 million to twenty skilled trades teachers nationwide. This year seven hundred sixty-eight teachers applied, with only twenty selected.
Harbor Freight District Manager Chris Edgerton presented the award. He told the student that people working in the skilled trades have a bright future and mentioned the recent natural disaster. Skilled trades will be vital in rebuilding the areas affected. State Senator Dan Stec praised Sorgule and Peru High School for supporting skilled trades and technology programs. He thanked all teachers for the work they do. Student Nate St. Louis praised his teacher’s ability to connect with students personally and maintain a professional atmosphere while keeping the lessons engaging. He concluded, “I’m happy to have the halls at the same time this great man has.” State Assemblyman Billy Jones and Congresswoman’s representative Jonathan Carman also presented recognition certificates to Sorgule.
Principal Matt Berry concluded the program by offering the students this advice. “Whatever you choose to do, love it. Whatever you do, do it with humility and set the standard. All the accolades will follow.”

Right out of high school, Chuck joined the Army with a dream of jumping out of airplanes. Scheduled to be in Korea, he was accepted into jump school.
He volunteered for Vietnam making many jumps as an Infantry Paratrooper in the 82nd and 173rd Airborne Divisions. Chuck went into combat with full ruck and a weapon longer than his body. His wife Sandy lovingly calls him Rambo with the photos to prove it.
For his valor, Chuck received several medals including a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Parachutist badge.

Harkness Chicken & Biscuit Dinner Sunday, October 16
The Harkness United Methodist Church has great news for almost everyone… the widely popular Chicken & Biscuit Dinner will return to the Harkness Church Hall (776 Hallock Hill Road, Peru) on Sunday, October 16th, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm!
The reason it will be good news for almost everyone is that the dinner will be served as Take-out only. Rather than risking the health of in-house diners, the “Chicken Team” has opted for the drive-through option this year. Although the socialization and fellowship in the dining hall have been popular for many, it’s a fact that for the past several years, the majority of dinners sold have been To-Go. All dinners will cost $10 and consist of delicious chicken and gravy with a baking powder biscuit, mashed potatoes, squash, peas, coleslaw, and a cupcake.
Because a large turnout is anticipated, an orderly traffic flow will be essential for all to safely collect the delicious meals, so guests are asked to please pay close attention to traffic directions signs at the four corners in Harkness. Unfortunately, there is no option for pre-ordering meals; for questions or more information, leave a message at 518-643-6690 or text 518-578-7185.
