Highlights of the Peru Town Board’s February 14, 2022, Regular Meeting

By John T. Ryan

The board appointed Ashley Akey and Alexis Grennan to the Peru Youth commission following an executive session. During the regular meeting, Supervisor Brandy McDonald said the board would be changing the Youth Commission’s By-Laws.

Town Clerk Dianne Miller reported that 2022 tax collections went very well. Fourteen residents took advantage of her expanded hours on Saturday, January 29.  She thanked Peru residents for paying all taxes on time for the fifth year in a row. She said that was her goal and it was done.

Councilman Kregg Bruno noted that a few residents are not cleaning up their dog’s waste on and near the Walking Trail. This shouldn’t be happening. The town provides free disposal bags at Heyworth-Mason Park.  He said, “It’s just as important to do in the wintertime as in the summertime.”

The board also:

Received Zoning/Code Enforcement Officer Bob Guynup’s recommendation that a committee be appointed to update the town zoning law. It’s a lengthy process the law so doing incorporating changes at one time makes sense. Guynup didn’t anticipate major changes but said several small changes need to be made, such as the current requirement that a business must apply for site plan approval for such simple acts as replacing an existing sign.  Councilman Kregg Bruno volunteered to serve on the committee.

Authorized advertising bids for the Water-Sewer Department’s 2002 Ford F-450 truck equipped with a nine ft. dump body and 9 ft. Fisher plow. (The bid ad appeared on the February 22, 2022, Press-Republican legal page).

Approved the Highway Department’s purchase of a 2022 2500HD Chevrolet Silverado Pickup from Middlebury, VT. Chevrolet, the only bidder, at a cost of $52,124.99.  t

Approved payment to Rifenburg Construction in the amount of $9,532.12 in connection with its ongoing sewer system upgrade. Town Attorney Matt Favro said he doesn’t anticipate that Rifenburg’s total payments will exceed its awarded bid price. Rifenburg encountered unexpected problems laying pipe at the Route 22-22B intersection.

At 6:35 p.m., the board adjourned to an executive session to discuss litigation and personnel issues.

House Republican Leadership’s Statement on Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine

From the office of Congresswoman Elise Stefanik
Washington, D.C. – Today, Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21), House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23), Republican Whip Steve Scalise (LA-01), House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul (TX-10), House Armed Services Committee Lead Republican Mike Rogers (AL-03), and House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Mike Turner (OH-10) issued the following statement in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“Vladimir Putin’s decision to launch a renewed invasion of Ukraine is reprehensible.
“Sadly, President Biden consistently chose appeasement and his tough talk on Russia was never followed by strong action. Lethal aid was slow-walked, anti-air and anti-ship capabilities were never directly provided, pre-invasion sanctions proportionate to the aggression Putin had already committed were never imposed, and sanctions on Nord Stream 2 were waived.
“The U.S. and our allies must now make the Putin regime pay for this aggression. Congress should compel President Biden to take the tough steps his administration has opposed thus far, we must permanently end Nord Stream 2, implement secondary sanctions on Russian financial institutions, and impose crippling penalties on the industries which the Russian military relies on to make war. Moreover, as House Republicans have been saying for a year, President Biden must finally promote U.S. energy development and help the United States become Europe’s energy partner of choice.
“China, Iran, and North Korea are watching. They must see us respond firmly to this Russian aggression.
“We stand in complete solidarity with the innocent Ukrainian people and vow to continue to support them as they defend themselves from Putin’s unprovoked onslaught.”

CCHD Program Reminds Residents to Heat Homes Safely

Clinton County, February 22, 2022. While the cold winter season hangs on, the Clinton County Health Department (CCHD) is reminding North Country residents to take important safety measures while heating their homes.

“The cold weather brings increased risk of house fires as we use our in-home heating systems more often,” stated Maryann Barto, Public Health Educator in CCHD’s Environmental Health and Safety Division’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program. “Thankfully, there are simple steps that you can take to help prevent these dangers and keep your home safe.”

Decrease risk of house fires by:

 Having heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

 Keeping anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment (i.e. a furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater).

 Having a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

 Testing your smoke & carbon monoxide detectors monthly.

 Making and practicing a fire escape plan with your household members.

 Using the proper kind of fuel (specified by the manufacturer) for fuel burning heaters.

 Ensuring the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

 Not using your oven to heat your home.

 Turning off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.

 Checking for recalls on any heating equipment or fire safety products (www.cpsc.gov).
