Peru – To the delight of many people, Green Acres Restaurant reopened for business on November 3rd. after being closed since October 3rd. Owner Donna Rowley is in the kitchen alongside her new cook Andrea Dampier, and waitress Chelsea Taylor is back in the dining room. On October 25th, Rowley commented on her Facebook page, “I’ve been cleaning and painting and realized I couldn’t imagine anyone else at Green Acres..my baby, my love. Please Be patient. We need baby steps to see how this will work.”
When the Peru Gazette visited last Saturday, the restaurant was gradually filling up. Longtime Peru resident Tony Tyrell was sitting at a corner table with a group of friends, including Greg Brunet, who remarked, “I like the food, I like the people, and I like the atmosphere here.” The aroma emanating from the kitchen enticed your reporter to order his old favorite two eggs over easy accompanied by corned beef hash and Green’s Acres super thick wheat toast.
Donna Rowley commented, “We’re going to go easy at first to see how things go. There’s still a ‘For Sale’ sign out front. The owner listed the building for six months, but we’re back in business.” Waitress Chelsea Taylor was ready to return when Rowley called. Chelsea commented, “I’ve worked here for over two years. I didn’t want to work anywhere else. I love it here.”
Many Peru and area residents are undoubtedly pleased with the reopening of this family restaurant. A photo the Peru Gazette posted last Saturday reached thousands of people. PRICE CHOPPER/MARKET 32 AND TOPS MARKETS COMPLETE MERGER TRANSACTION

Twelve Tops stores are to be divested and purchased by C&S Wholesale Grocers including the Peru, NY store

Combined Companies Will Maintain Separate Brands But Create Scale and Bring Efficiencies to Local Shoppers
Schenectady, N.Y./Williamsville, N.Y. — With the regulatory review process complete and approval from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) received, Price Chopper/Market 32 and Tops Markets today announced the closure of their merger, as proposed earlier this year.
Under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will be managed locally by their respective leaders and continue to be referred to by their established brand identities, but will be owned and overseen by a new parent company, Northeast Grocery, Inc. As previously announced, Scott Grimmett, the current president and CEO of Price Chopper/Market 32, will lead the new parent company. He will also serve on its board of directors as will Frank Curci, former Tops Markets Chairman and CEO.
The agreement cements a powerful alliance between the two storied independent grocery chains, as it virtually doubles their collective footprint in the Northeast. With increased scale across their now-combined footprint of nearly 300 stores, the merged companies are better positioned to leverage increased value for customers; advance shared opportunities for innovation; and fortify the depth of their expanded workforce, community, and trade partnerships, thereby becoming stronger and more competitive.
“We’re appreciative of the FTC’s diligence in reviewing this merger and grateful to have received all of the necessary approvals. Now, we can dedicate ourselves to bringing these two storied grocery chains together, leveraging best practices, developing new opportunities, and finding efficiencies that will help us continue to deliver distinctive shopping experiences,” said Grimmett.
The regulatory review process by the FTC mandates the divestiture of 12 of the combined companies’ stores. C&S Wholesale Grocers (C&S) has been approved to purchase all 12 stores. GU Markets LLC, an affiliate of C&S Wholesale Grocers, will operate these stores. C&S will continue to recognize the union workforce at these locations. The 12 Tops stores to be divested and purchased by C&S Wholesale Grocers are:

Assemblyman Jones tours veteran service locations, hosts roundtables

From the office of Assemblyman Billy Jones

Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay Lake) recently toured several local veteran organizations in Clinton and Franklin counties and hosted several roundtable discussions with North Country veterans.

“Many brave New Yorkers have made incredible sacrifices for our country, and they deserve all the support we can give them,” Assemblyman Jones said. “I’d like to thank these veterans for their service, and for speaking with me and helping me better understand their specific questions and concerns, which helps me craft better legislation to fit their needs. I’ll continue working to ensure our veterans have access to essential services and programs when they return from duty.”

The tour began in Clinton County with a visit to the North Country Veterans Association (NCVA), a roundtable discussion at the American Legion Post 1619 and a tour of the new community-based outpatient Veterans Affairs (VA) clinic in Plattsburgh. In Franklin County, Jones toured the Saranac Lake VA clinic, visited with members of Homeward Bound Adirondacks and hosted a roundtable discussion at AMVETS in Malone.

Jones is currently working to secure $250,000 in funding to assist Homeward Bound in the construction of their new facility designed to house and assist local veterans. Additionally, in the 2021-2022 state budget, Jones secured $100,000 in funding for the NCVA for a total of $400,000 over the past 4 years, which provides assistance to veterans and their families in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. The budget also:

  •        included $5 million in funding for the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project to provide peer-to-peer support for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and other behavior or mental health challenges;
  •        reestablished the existing state Division of Veterans’ Services call-in line to connect veterans directly to Veterans Benefit Advisors;
  •          extended tuition benefits for eligible members of New York State’s military forces to attend college in New York State for five years; and
  •         extended the Hire-a-Vet tax credit, which offers a tax credit for employers who hire veterans, for two additional years.
