Does census data reveal the movements of out-of-state residents? – VTDigger

“Results from the 2020 census have revealed the deep impact of Vermont’s shifting population, as Chittenden County gained more people than any other part of the state.  With closer scrutiny, another trend emerges: Ski communities, and areas popular with tourists and seasonal homeowners, had a mini boom in population, with some reporting increases 10 times higher than the state average.”

“Every Time I Come Here I Think I’m in Heaven”

By John T. Ryan

September 4, 2021 – It was over seven years ago, in May 2014, when the Peru Gazette photographed Serenity Garden on the Harkness-Clintonville Rd. At that time, Art Ford, a logger by trade, had worked on his property off and on for about three or four years. He had planted a few flowers and laid down a few stone terraces.

Over the past seven years, many people have grown to love Serenity Garden. Today, several flower-laden terraces overlook a beautiful pond. A U.S. Flag with an American soldier kneeling at his foot flies proudly across the pond.

This morning Art’s wife Ann Poulin was carefully removing small bales of grass from the garden’s stone path. The Gazette’s photo journey had just about ended when a car stopped. The driver, Joan Coulon from Dannemora, walked up to Ann and said, “I want to give this to Mr. Ford. I want to thank him. I love this place so much. Every time I come here, I think I’m in heaven.” Mrs. Coulon gave Ann a framed photo she had taken of Art seated in one of the garden’s chairs. She surrounded the photo with small pebbles, similar to those that grace the garden’s path.

In our 2014 story, Art Ford said, “I hope people stop by and think about something other than what’s going on in the world today.” When people ask what he’s named this place he says, “Sometimes I think “Serenity” would be a good name, but I really don’t have a name.” A Christian cross surrounded by beautiful tulips overlooked the peaceful pond. Ford said he hopes people take time to think about God when they visit. He remarked, “I say I’m trying to get into heaven on a maintenance visa.”

CVPH Adjusts Visitation Policy

Visitors continue to be welcome; waiting areas closed

PLATTSBURGH, NY (09/03/2021) – While visitors will continue to be welcome at The University of Vermont Health Network – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH), temporary changes to its visitation guidelines begin Tuesday, September 7 in effort to protect the health of patients, staff and the community as the region sees an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.

On Tuesday, waiting areas throughout the facility will be closed and visitors will no longer have access to the Cafeteria or Gift Shop. Visitors will be required to remain in patient rooms for the duration of their visit and be masked at all times.

Other changes include:

  • Those accompanying surgical patients will be asked to wait outside the facility and leave a phone number to be contacted when the patient’s procedure is complete.
  • The Emergency Department waiting area will permit 1 support person for adult patients and 2 support people for pediatric patients.
  • One support person will be permitted to accompany patients to Physician Offices/Outpatient Clinics located on the main campus. Both the patient and support person will be screened in the office. Waiting areas will be closed.

“Family members play an important role in the health of our patients. The changes in our Welcoming Policy balance the needs of our patients and the benefits of having loved ones near with our charge to protect their health and the health of our team,” explained Chief Medical Officer Lisa Mark, MD.

Patients may have up to two visitors at a time. Visitors are welcome on most nursing units seven days a week from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. There are a few exceptions including the inpatient psychiatry units where visitors are welcome daily from 2 to 6 p.m. and the Skilled Nursing Facility where visitation is from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day.

More information on visitation at CVPH is available at: UVMHealth.org/CVPHVisitation.

Celebrating Labor Day: September 6, 2021

From the U.S. Department of Labor

Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. In 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.”
