Women Not to Be Denied

By John T. Ryan

If you missed the Saturday, July 31st Champlain Valley Suffrage Centennial Auto Tour opening event this past Saturday, you missed a wonderful presentation. It was held at the Clinton County Historical Association on the Old Base Oval in Plattsburgh.

Historical Association Director Helen Allen Nerska assumed the role of local suffragist Harriet Dudley Bell. She introduced the famous suffragist Susan B. Anthony (Linda McKinney) and local suffragists Marion ‘Dot’ Parkhurst (Ellen Adams), Hannah Straight Lansing (Jan Couture), and Inez Milholland (Sandra Weber). The presentations were enlightening, entertaining, and educational. National and local suffragists, often supported by their husbands, were not to be denied.

Click here to view more Peru Gazette photos including a schedule of future Auto Tour events.

The Plattsburgh event was the first of several Auto Tour presentations in Essex and Warren Counties in New York and in Addison and Vergennes, Vermont.

Peru’s meteorologist John Hart comments on 2021 rainfall totals

Saturday, August 31, 2021 – For record purposes the month finished up at “my observation time,” 6 am. today, with a total of 5.90″ of rainfall, which is 2.61″ above my 35-year July average! That brings the January-through-July 2021 total here to 18.52″, which is 0.64″ above average for the period!
And, as of July 24th, the U.S. Drought Monitor has taken our Peru township area from the Abnormally Dry area to the Moderate Drought area—-which I can vouch for not only from precip measurements but also from conditions here at home! (The remainder of Clinton County, along with Eastern Franklin County, and the northern half of Vermont remain Abnormally Dry.)
And for those who haven’t kept track, much of Eastern New York and southern Vermont have already had more than their average ANNUAL rainfall!
But we’re not completely out of the woods here yet—we still need at least average rainfall/snowfall into the early winter to safely say we’re pretty much caught up!
