Gypsy moth caterpillar invasion: Gypsy moth caterpillar invasion: ‘It’s a plague’ | Adirondack Explorer

Peru – “For the past week, Diane Parmeter Wills has been picking caterpillars by the hundreds off her two apple trees at her home in Peru (Clinton County), in the northeastern part of the park. Wills estimates she pulled 2,000 the first day, (easily sliding bunches of them into a pail), 1,000 the second, 600 the third, and 250 on the fourth day, with still more to do.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s June 17th Covid Update

On Tuesday, after 472 days, New York hit a vaccination milestone—70 percent of adult New Yorkers have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine. After reaching this goal, we lifted most of the State’s remaining COVID restrictions. This means no more restrictions across commercial settings, including retail, food services, offices, gyms, entertainment, hair salons, barber shops, etc.—as well as no more social gathering limits. Existing COVID health protocols are still in place for some settings such as public transportation, health facilities, and indoor Pre-K-12 schools. But the easing of these restrictions means that we’re no longer just surviving—we’re thriving. Congratulations New Yorkers, because of you and your actions, we were able to get to this point. This achievement is all thanks to you.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations dropped to 580. Of the 119,272 tests reported yesterday, 418, or 0.35 percent, were positive. The 7-day average percent positivity was 0.39 percent. There were 149 patients in ICU yesterday, down nine from the previous day. Of them, 86 are intubated. Sadly, we lost five New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 70.4 percent of adult New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose, per the CDC. Over the past 24 hours, 76,160 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 20,372,195 total doses with 62.3 percent of adult New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See additional data on the State’s Vaccine Tracker.
3. Watch our latest “Reimagine, Rebuild, Renew” campaign ads. These new ads raise awareness about the State’s rent relief and small business programs to help New Yorkers recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Watch the first ad here and the second ad here.
4. Today we announced the third group of winners of the State’s Vaccine Scholarship incentive. These ten vaccinated New Yorkers will attend a SUNY or CUNY school with their tuition and room & board covered. And with two more drawings, there are still opportunities for a chance to win a full-ride scholarship to a state school. Learn more and get a shot to make your future at ny.gov/vaccinescholarship.
5. An estimated $2.2 billion in federal food assistance will go to children in New York who were unable to access free school meals due to the pandemic. Effective this week, food benefits will begin being issued to children enrolled to receive free school meals but had their in-person school attendance reduced due to the pandemic.
6. Open enrollment for the NY State of Health will remain open through the end of the year. The NY State of Health provides seamless access to affordable coverage and I encourage uninsured New Yorkers to enroll today.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: This weekend, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day commemorating the day that enslaved people in Texas finally found out that they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation—three years after President Lincoln signed the Proclamation. Many events will be held in New York City and across the state on Saturday showcasing Black authors, artists and more. Last year, New York recognized Juneteenth as a state holiday and today the U.S. officially recognized June 19th as a federal holiday.
Ever Upward,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

Empire State Development Announces Plans For $6 Million Upgrade of Saranac Lake Civic Center

EMPIRE STATE DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR $6 MILLION UPGRADE OF SARANAC LAKE CIVIC CENTER

Project Will Enhance Regional Sports Infrastructure Ahead of Lake Placid 2023 World University Games

Exterior Rendering Available Here

Empire State Development (ESD) today announced plans for a $6 million upgrade of Saranac Lake Civic Center in Franklin County. The year-round, not-for-profit recreation and events facility will undergo interior and exterior improvements, with a planned completion to coincide with the center’s hosting commitments for the Lake Placid 2023 World University Games curling events. The project is being supported by $4.5 million in Upstate Revitalization Initiative funds through the North Country Regional Economic Development Council.

ESD Acting Commissioner and President and CEO-designate Eric Gertler said, “The Lake Placid 2023 World University Games will welcome thousands of athletes, families and fans to the North Country, and showcase New York State to a global audience. Projects like the upgrades to the Saranac Lake Civic Center will ensure that our facilities meet world-class standards, while providing the necessary infrastructure to accommodate future athletic competitions of this size and caliber.”

The $6 million capital project includes interior and exterior renovations, as well as energy efficiency, fire and safety improvements. The primary project will be rink improvements to ensure the ice surface meets world class competition standards, with additional upgrades to kitchen, locker room facilities and spectator seating. These improvements will better position Saranac Lake to attract future events after the 2023 Games, enhancing the regional sports competition infrastructure. The project coincides with the North Country Regional Economic Development Council’s strategy of strengthening the region’s global sports brand by attracting international sporting events that would stimulate private investment and job growth and catalyze the renovation of the area’s sports and hospitality facilities.

Like the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, the 2023 World University Games are expected to catalyze private investment, boost tourism, increase employment and create new business opportunities. While Lake Placid will serve as the host for the Games, neighboring communities like Saranac Lake will host competitive events, supporting a more widespread regional economic impact.

Ollie Burgess, Saranac Lake Civic Center Board Member, said, “On behalf of my fellow board members, we are very excited to upgrade the Saranac Lake Civic Center ahead of the 2023 World University Games. Thanks in large part to the support from Empire State Development, these renovations will help us to attract future competitions while ensure that we can continue supporting the community and youth sports groups that rely on the rink.”

NCREDC Co-Chairs James McKenna and Dr. Ty Stone said, “The upgrades to Saranac Lake Civic Center align with our regional strategy to support and enhance the North Country’s winter sports foundation. This project complements other state investments in the region and will invite athletes and guests alike to explore and experience the greater Saranac Lake community during the World University Games, and beyond.”

The Saranac Lake Civic Center was originally built in the 1970s to support youth hockey in the region. In 1989, Saranac Lake Civic Center, Inc. was created to take over the lease of the arena and to operate the facility. The center hosts winter sports like hockey, curling and figure skating, along with non-sporting events like auctions and tradeshows. The 24,000 square-foot center has 15,000 square-feet continuous open floor space and includes multiple locker rooms; bleachers that can accommodate up to 500 people; and a heated viewing area in the lobby.

Senator Dan Stec said, “You get one chance to make a great first impression which is why updating and upgrading our sporting venues, including the Saranac Lake Civic Center, is so important as we prepare for the 2023 World University Games. The eyes of the winter sporting world will be upon us and the ice at the Civic Center will be perfect!”

Assemblyman Billy Jones said, “The $4.5 million investment into the Saranac Lake Civic Center is much-welcome news for a community facility that plays a huge part in recreational opportunities in the North Country. The renovations being funded will help prepare the center for the Lake Placid 2023 World University Games, as well as provide a significant boost to the local economy through additional job opportunities for our families and increased tourism. I greatly look forward to seeing the civic center when the work is complete and it’s ready to welcome more events to the region.”

Franklin County Legislature Chair Don Dabiew said, “The Saranac Lake Civic Center has served communities throughout Franklin County through the years, and these upgrades will ensure that it can continue to host a variety of events for generations to come. This project will help us welcome the 2023 World University Games, and we couldn’t be more excited to showcase all that our region has to offer.”

Saranac Lake Mayor Clyde Rabideau said, “The improvements to the civic center are the latest in a series of new investments and exciting projects underway in Saranac Lake. While we are eager to welcome the World University Games in 2023, we happily invite New Yorkers and visitors alike to explore our community before then to experience all we have to offer.”

Harrietstown Town Supervisor Michael Kilroy said, “The town is in full support of this project as the Civic Center has served an important role in our community for many years. This investment will undoubtedly benefit Harrietstown, Saranac Lake, and the surrounding region, and we wish everyone involved the best with the planned upgrades.”

New York’s state of emergency remains in place

“Now well over a year later, 70% of adults 18 years old and older have now been partially vaccinated in New York. COVID-19 cases have been on the sharp decline. And now, even most COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, marking a significant milestone in the state’s fight against the virus.”

However, the state of emergency has remained in place, allowing the governor to retain much of his emergency power.

“It should have been done months ago,” state Assemblyman Chris Tague said about lifting the state of emergency. “You know, this is what happens when you have one-party rule in Albany, and so to speak, one-person rule.”
