Featuring Tours of the Historic Bluff Point Lighthouse with additional historic island farm tours

Sunday, July 11, 2021

Transportation leaving every 20 minutes from 9:30 am to 1:20 pm

Peru Dock, 3930 State Route 9, Plattsburgh, $30 per person

The public is invited to join the Clinton County Historical Association (CCHA) on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at the Peru Dock for the opportunity to visit the historic Bluff Point Lighthouse on Valcour Island.  Round trip transportation will be provided for $30 per person.  The fee will include a trail guide and George Clifford’s book on Lake Champlain Lighthouses. Special Lighthouse T-Shirts will also be on sale that day.  The boat, that holds 4-5 people per trip, will begin shuttling at 9:30 am with trips to the island every 20 minutes.  The Lighthouse will close at 2:30 pm and all visitors to the Island must return by 3 pm.  In the event of wind or thunderstorms the tour will be cancelled and a rain date registration for August 8th will be offered. Refunds due to the cancellation will be made if requested.  At 10:30 am and 1:00 pm Roger Harwood will host a short tour of the historic Harney farm location.

Pre-Registration, payment and scheduling departure times must be done by July 7th to guarantee a spot on the boat.  Once on the island a Docent will be available for tours of the Lighthouse. Participants must be aware that the trip requires the physical ability to debark and board from the Island’s natural landing, walking on uneven surfaces over rough terrain and climbing stairs.  The Island is also famous for poison ivy plants.  An adult must accompany anyone under the age of 12 and those under the age of 16 must bring and wear their own life jackets.  Individuals may bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while on the island and must carry out what you carry in.

Visitors to the Lighthouse will view displays depicting the history of Lake Champlain Lighthouses, Lake Champlain’s Military History, the 20th Century Camps on Valcour Island and the Life of a Lighthouse Keeper. Visitors may climb to the Lantern Room to see the functioning light and the outstanding view it offers.

For more information and to register your spot, please call the Clinton County Historical Association at (518) 561-0340.  Information about the Lighthouse can be found on Facebook or the Museum’s website.

Masks Still Required At NYS Schools

The NYS Department of Education advises:
As of September 1, 2020, school districts were permitted to reopen, under Executive Order 202.60, “subject to adherence to Department of Health issued guidance and directives.” These have included the submission of reopening plans to address, among other things, distancing and health requirements.
The State Education Department has been in communication with Executive staff regarding the attached letter from Dr. Howard Zucker, New York State Commissioner of Health. According to conversations with Executive staff, the intent of this letter was to obtain a response from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding differing standards for summer camps and schools; it has not changed any existing arrangements. Therefore, schools should continue to operate under their existing procedures until further notice. No changes have been, or will be, made by the Executive until after Monday June 7 to afford the CDC an opportunity to respond to the letter.

Immunocompromised Vermonters navigate the new normal – VTDigger

“Across the state, Vermonters with weakened immune systems are navigating a newly vaccinated society while knowing they could still be at risk. That includes people with cancer or who are undergoing chemotherapy, transplant recipients, HIV-positive people and a variety of other conditions that require someone to take immune-suppressing medication.”

Surprise beach opening elates city residents | Sun Community News PLATTSBURGH |

Source: Surprise beach opening elates city residents | Sun Community News PLATTSBURGH | Within an hour of a surprise opening of the Plattsburgh City Beach, residents flocked to the sandy shores to enjoy an early taste of summer.

During a brief 2-mile drive this morning the Peru Gazette came across four interesting stories

#1 – Adirondack Farms was cutting an extremely good hay crop in small fields adjacent to the Barney Downs. Rd. A quarter mile away on the River Rd. another Adirondack Farms machine was tedding cut hay prior to its being chopped. AMAZING TECHNOLOGY!!!!!!

Story #2 – Forrence orchard workers installed apple tree netting today in an orchard adjacent to the River Rd. and Barney Downs Rd. The netting protects the valuable Honeycrisp trees from hail and pests. This is the 4th consecutive year Forrence’s are using netting in this orchard. The netting is reusable. It has a fifteen to twenty-year lifetime.

Story #3 – Workers constructing a concert stage at Heyworth-Mason Park. The town plans to host its Sunday evening concerts at the park this year.

Story #4 – Many people walk dogs at Heyworth-Mason Park. Jillian Kezar walks her boa constrictor named Jackson. At six years of age, Jackson’s not too big, but Jillian said he should eventually grow to seven to nine feet long. She stated that boas live fifteen to thirty years. This is her third snake.

Tina Rock, another snake lover, noticed Jackson. She’s also owned boas and just had to hold him.
It was an interesting morning for your Gazette reporter.

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s June 3rd COVID Update

June 3, 2021.
Yesterday, there were fewer than 17,000 COVID cases in the U.S. and New York, we saw a record-low positivity rate of 0.44 percent. And for the first time in over eight months, hospitalizations fell below 1,000. These numbers really show that vaccines work. New York is back, and that’s a testament to the New Yorkers who have stayed tough and smart over the last year. The vaccines are safe, free, and effective, period, and the sooner we get each and every eligible New Yorker vaccinated, the sooner we can finish off this pandemic once and for all.
Photo of the Day: New York is back.
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations are at 970. Of the 128,002 tests reported yesterday, 565, or 0.44 percent, were positive. The 7-day average percent positivity was 0.60 percent. There were 245 patients in ICU yesterday, down seven from the previous day. Of them, 143 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 10 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 65.7 percent of adult New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 77,131 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 19,226,670 total doses with 57.6 percent of adult New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See additional data on the State’s Vaccine Tracker.
3. Yesterday, we announced the first 10 winners of the State’s Vaccine Scholarship incentive. These 10 vaccinated New Yorkers will attend a SUNY or CUNY school with their tuition and room & board covered. And with four more drawings, there are still opportunities for a chance to win a full-ride, four-year scholarship to a state college or university. Learn more and get a shot to make your future.
4. A new pop-up vaccination site will open at Belmont Park to coincide with the 2021 Belmont Stakes. The site will operate adjacent to the Clubhouse Entrance of Belmont Park on Friday, June 4, from 12pm to 6pm and on Saturday, June 5, from 9am to 5pm. Racing fans who get vaccinated at the site will receive complimentary general admission to the 2022 Belmont Stakes.
5. Starting June 11, Citi Field will expand vaccinated seating capacity. The stadium will expand its vaccinated seating to 90 percent of the stadium for Mets home games. More fans, more energy—another reason to get vaccinated. Excelsior Pass is accepted at Citi Field as proof of vaccination.
6. The New York International Auto Show will return to the Javits Center this August. Thanks to the expansion at the Javits Center, the event will be held at pre-pandemic levels. Tickets for the auto show go on sale June 30.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: The Peregrine falcon chicks nesting at the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge need your help—they need names! Visitors to the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge can cast their vote for the three chicks that hatched this spring. Voting will be held through Sunday, June 6.
If you were forwarded this email, you can subscribe to New York State’s Coronavirus Updates here.
Ever Upward,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

An unforgettable rescue | Adirondack Explorer

It was 14 years ago that Peter Buccinna almost died on Saddleback Mountain. The experienced hiker was out climbing with friends on Jan. 16, 2007, when a misstep sent him sliding 400 feet down an open rock face. Buccinna broke his leg and pelvis. His rescue is one that gets recounted by rescuers and locals. It was one of the worst accidents in recent memory.
