DEC Ranger Rescues Injured Hiker

Town of North Elba, Essex County
Wilderness Search: On July 22 at 11 p.m., DEC’s Ray Brook Dispatch received a call from a pair of hikers reporting that a member of their party was overdue from hiking Mount Marcy in the High Peaks Wilderness Area. Forest Ranger LaPierre responded to the Adirondak Loj parking lot to interview the reporting party. At 1:36 a.m., Ranger LaPierre located the 33-year-old subject from New York City up the trail from Marcy Dam. The subject had suffered a knee injury, was unable to walk, and was likely dehydrated. The Ranger splinted the injury and provided the hiker with warmth, food, and water. She escorted the hiker back to the outpost and set him up in a sleeping bag so he could rest while the Ranger continued back to the Loj. Ranger LaPierre then drove a UTV in to pick up the subject, and at 4:45 a.m., the hiker was reunited with his party and taken for further medical care.

Clarkson University and Clinton Community College form Relationship for Advanced Manufacturing

Plattsburgh, NY – 7/27/2021 – Numerous members of the regional manufacturing and workforce development communities joined elected representatives who came together in Plattsburgh today for a MOU signing between Clarkson University and Clinton Community College to show their support for the partnership that supports advanced manufacturing, engineering and workforce training used across the North Country and New York State.

Clarkson University, a world leader in advanced materials research and STEM education, and Clinton Community College (CCC) and its Institute for Advanced Manufacturing in Plattsburgh, NY, a regional hub for advanced manufacturing education and training programs have joined forces to conduct research pertaining to the use of Advanced Manufacturing technologies and to strengthen workforce training and education for regional industries.

Organized in partnership with the North Country Chamber of Commerce, a ceremony marking the signing of an MOU shared how the two institutions will work together to identify and solicit funding opportunities to support mutually beneficial education and training programs, including credentialing, certificate, or badge programs, designed to support the needs of regional industries for workforce development in the field of advanced and/or innovative manufacturing.

“The North Country offers an incredible quality of life to families living in our region and has a workforce ready for the additional job training and workforce development in advanced additive manufacturing technologies that companies need today,” said Tony Collins, President of Clarkson University. “Clarkson University’s partnership with Clinton Community College supports a future-ready workforce as well as engages and attracts companies that need innovation-oriented research and the applied solutions that we can offer through CCC’s Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Clarkson’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing.”

Clinton Community College President Ray DiPasquale shared, “Clinton Community College is very proud of our partnership with the North Country Chamber of Commerce and Clarkson University, our esteemed educational partner. Our continued partnership assures our students a seamless transfer to Clarkson and wonderful opportunities for exchanges of ideas and use of facilities amongst our faculty and staff. We look forward to our business partners working with us as we prepare our students and provide our manufacturing facilities with highly skilled and trained employees. Clinton Community College has many educational partners but this signing assures the college an outstanding partnership for today, tomorrow, and a very bright future for all with Clarkson University.”

“Clinton Community College and Clarkson University are two of our region’s most important assets in support of advanced manufacturing,” says Garry Douglas, President of the North Country Chamber of Commerce. “This new MOU takes collaboration between the two of them to a new level, offering some exciting new opportunities for future students and trainees and making the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing in Plattsburgh an even stronger hub for training and economic development. Congratulations and thank you to both schools, and especially Presidents Tony Collins and Ray DiPasquale and their teams, and to Joel Wood, our Director of NAmTrans, for his facilitation and assistance. Onward and upward!”

TRIO OF BLUEGRASS ALL-STARS COMING TO PLATTSBURGH JULY 31

Palmer Street Coffeehouse Collaboration Brings The Revenants To Harborside

Fans of bluegrass music are in for a special treat on July 31 at 7:30 p.m. with the arrival of the celebrated trio The Revenants — Bluegrass Gospel Project alumni Taylor Armerding, Andy Greene, and Kirk Lord — in Plattsburgh for the latest installment of the Curbside At Harborside concert series, presented in collaboration with Plattsburgh’s Palmer Street Coffeehouse. Attendants at the Harborside Stage (located behind the D&H Railway Station and adjacent to the City of Plattsburgh Marina on Dock Street) will begin parking vehicles on a first-come, first-served basis at 6:30 p.m. for this concert, with tickets available at the gate. Admission is only $20 per carload — not per person — with all of the box office proceeds going to the artists.

The concert will be the Palmer Street Coffeehouse’s first live program since the COVID-19 pandemic began, featuring a band that brings to the stage the best that the bluegrass genre has to offer: memorable lyrics, lush harmonies, a seamless blend of instrumental and vocal sound, and plenty of high-octane improvisation that will keep everyone’s toes tapping.

For traditional bluegrass faithful, The Revenants perform plenty of bluegrass standards, as well as original works authored in a classic style. Fan For admirers of progressive bluegrass, The Revenants shines here as well, offering original compositions that echo influences like Sam Bush and the New Grass Revival — as well as innovative bluegrass arrangements of a classic rock or country tune, such as Bob Seger’s Mainstreet and Jesse Winchester’s A Showman’s Life.
