A Community-Building Addition to Peru’s Lifestyle

By John T. Ryan

Peru – Lauren Prue commented, “Ali Webbinaro and I want to build community. We want the Peru Town Market at Heyworth Mason Park to bring people together after a long hard year.” Ali and Lauren’s goal came true when over 250 people turned out to enjoy the Peru Town Market on a warm, humid Sunday, June 27th. Twenty-three vendors and two food and beverage trucks set up on the fringes of the park’s sizable green space. Some people commented, “We didn’t know this beautiful park existed.”

Customers found many items, including cheese, meat, maple syrup, candles, soap, woodworking creations, leather goods, hand-sewn items, watercolors, metal flowers, hand-made jewelry. One vendor even offered massage.

Future Peru Town Markets will be held on Sundays, July 25th, August 29th (2 to 6 p.m.), September 19th, and October 10th (12 to 4 p.m.). Prue commented, “On July 25th, we expect most of the vendors to return, and we’ll have new vendors, including four local growers.”

Through August, visitors can combine a visit to the market with music. Peru’s summer concert series will be held at Heyworth Mason Park every Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. The park has plenty of room for families to spread out blankets, space for the kids to play, several picnic tables, and a dog park. It’s hard to find a more enjoyable place to spend a Sunday afternoon and early evening.

Plattsburgh Celebrates a Native Son’s Achievements

By John T. Ryan

A July 4th morning’s dedication ceremony recalled a tragic event; nevertheless, smiles and laughter abounded. The ceremony dedicated Brendon Palmer-Angell’s mural “Reach for the Stars! The Michael Anderson Mural.”

Located on the Westelcom Building at 23 Durkee Street and overlooking the city’s soon to be opened Arts Park, the mural depicts Space Shuttle Columbia Payload Commander Lt. Col. Michael Anderson, born on Christmas Day 1959 at the Plattsburgh Air Force Base Hospital. Lt. Col. Anderson and his six fellow NASA crew members were killed in the shuttle’s disaster in 2003. Anderson served at Plattsburgh Air Force Base as a member of the U.S. Air Force and applied to be an astronaut while serving at the base. He was in charge of the Columbia Mission’s science experiments. Anderson’s wife Sandy, his daughters Kaycee and Sydney, and his sister, Brenda Anderson Daniely, attended Sunday’s dedication and served as Grand Marshall’s of Plattsburgh’s 4th of July Parade.

Plattsburgh Mayor Chris Rosenquest welcomed the good crowd and presented a Key to the City to Mrs. Anderson. The SUNY Plattsburgh Gospel Choir began the celebration with “The Star-Spangled Banner” and concluded it with “God Bless America.” Mayor Rosenquest said he was raised on Plattsburgh Force Base. As a person of color like Lt. Colonel Anderson and his family, the mayor said he wished more people like him lived in this area. The ceremony reminded those present of the wonderful people Plattsburgh Air Force Base brought to this area. So many retired here and continue to bless our community with their presence.

Great Turnout at Plattsburgh Parade

There was a huge crowd in downtown Plattsburgh today for the July 4th Parade. The weather was cool but very pleasant. The parade came up Bridge Street and made a right turn to pass in front of City Hall. The Plattsburgh Fore Department led the parade followed by flag-waving Mayor Chris Rosenquest.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Michael P. Anderson’s family members served as Grand Marshals. Space Shuttle Columbia Payload Commander, Lt. Col. Anderson and his six fellow NASA crew members were killed in the shuttle’s disaster in 2003. Col. Anderson was born at the Plattsburgh Air Force Base Hospital on Christmas Day 1959 and later return as a member of the U.S. Air Force. He departed Plattsburgh to become an astronaut.
