The Strand Center for the Arts in August
PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Strand Center for the Arts is thrilled to host “North Country Exposures: A Candid Look at the Past Decade,” artwork created by photographer, Gabe Dickens, in the Main Gallery. This upcoming exhibit will open in The Strand Center Main Gallery on Friday, August 6, 2021. A free reception will be held from 5:00-8:00 pm that night.
Since obtaining his degree in newspaper journalism from SUNY Plattsburgh in 2011, Dickens, a native of Minneapolis, has worked as a freelance photographer documenting life in the North Country and beyond. In that time, he has amassed numerous accolades and a remarkable portfolio, primarily through his work as a photojournalist for the local newspaper, the Press-Republican. Dickens has also worked closely with various departments at SUNY Plattsburgh, most notably becoming a key component of the Cardinal Athletics brand through his action photography.
His work has appeared in other local publications including Lake Champlain Weekly, Seven Days, and the Burlington Free Press, as well as nationally and internationally via the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Daily Mail. Read more »

Starting the week with some good news: about 75 percent of adult New Yorkers have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine and we’ve administered over 22 million vaccine doses across the state. But the bad news is that a quarter of New York adults are still unvaccinated, which translates to roughly 3.5 million unvaccinated individuals. With the highly transmissible Delta variant here in New York, COVID will spread and it has already. The number of new cases is about five times more than it was just a month ago. Of the new cases in New York, about 72 percent are the Delta variant. Protect yourself from the Delta variant and COVID—get vaccinated.
Video of the Day: We launched a new ad to encourage New Yorkers to get vaccinated. Watch it here.
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations are at 546. Of the 56,868 tests reported yesterday, 1,296, or 2.28 percent, were positive. The 7-day positivity average was 1.88 percent. There were 123 patients in ICU yesterday, up three from the previous day. Of them, 42 are intubated. Sadly, we lost four New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 74.6 percent of adult New Yorkers have received at least one vaccine dose, per the CDC. Over the past 24 hours, 22,912 total doses have been administered. To date, New York has administered 22,055,646 total doses with 68.0 percent of adult New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See additional data on the State’s Vaccine Tracker.
3. The State is allocating $15 million to community organizations to bolster vaccination efforts in ZIP codes with low vaccination rates. Some of the groups receiving funding include the Hispanic Federation, the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, the New York Immigration Coalition, the Asian American Federation, the Charles B. Wang Community Center, and the APICHA Community Health Center.
4. New York is streamlining the rent relief program application process. The new process immediately relaxes documentation standards for both tenants and landlords and implements a streamlined process for submission of arrears documentation for multi-tenant landlords effective tomorrow, July 27. Learn more about the rental assistance program.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: The Force is strong with two Western New York brothers. Lockport residents Santiago Schaus and his brother Gavyn had their room completely decked out with Star Wars trappings, thanks to Make-A-Wish Western New York. They were even paid a from Darth Vader and other characters. Santiago was adopted by his family three years ago from Colombia, and even though he has a form of epilepsy that makes him unable to speak, Star Wars became a way the brothers were able to bond a grow closer.
Ever Upward,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

Peru – The Town of Peru’s new mini excavator arrived on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. The cost will be shared by the Highway and Water-Sewer Departments. Highway Superintendent Michael Farrell and Water-Sewer Superintendent say the smaller, more agile machine will speed sidewalk and water-sewer projects. Its smaller footprint and rubber pads will also reduce property damage.
The Peru Gazette thanks Counselman Rick Barber for this photo.

For months, Vasquez and her husband have looked for a place. The market, she said, has been nonexistent. Rents have gone up. Rare listings she finds that could accommodate her family disappear within hours.

Peru – July 25, 2021 – Many people are having a great time at the Peru Town Market at Heyworth Mason Park. The beautiful park is lined with vendors selling a wide variety of local hand-made and hand-grown merchandise. Plus, the ice cream and food trucks are helping everyone enjoy this beautiful, warm summer day. Parking is sufficient, primarily because the helpful market organizers are directing traffic to open spots.
The Peru Gazette took photos of several vendors merchandise (not all) to let you know what you’ve missed if you haven’t attended today. The vendors will be there until 6 p.m. The next Town Market takes place on Sunday, August 29th.
From 6 to 8 pm. people will hear the music of the NightHawK Band. Their concert is part of the Town of Peru’s series of Sunday evening concert series at Heyworth Mason Park.

Many other activities continue into the nighttime hours and tomorrow. See the schedule of events below. The Gazette had the opportunity to say hello to Rober Long Jr. and his daughter Cora. Roger owns Adirondack Hardware, the south side of which will have a beautiful mural by this evening. Amy Guglielmo of Plattsburgh Outdoor Art and a friend were working on the mural this morning. This afternoon community members, especially kids, will be joining in the effort.

“PLATTSBURGH — Breakthrough infections among those vaccinated against COVID-19 were entirely expected, Dr. Keith Collins says. But the infectious disease specialist thinks people should make a distinction between infection and disease. “The vast majority of people that have these breakthrough infections are just that, they’re infected but they’re not sick,” he explained. “A much smaller number actually get sick and, of those, very, very few of them get sick enough to be hospitalized or die.”
