COVID-19 Survivors Can Help Others by Donating Convalescent Plasma

CVPH effort underway to promote awareness, recruit donors

PLATTSBURGH, NY (03/31/2021) — COVID-19 survivors can now help others fighting the virus by donating convalescent plasma at the Adirondack Region Blood Center, a program of the University of Vermont Health Network- Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH).

“If you give someone who is sick with COVID-19 convalescent plasma, especially in the early stages of the infection, it can help them fight the virus and recover,” explained CVPH Infectious Disease Specialist Keith Collins, MD. He added that timing plays an important part in the success of this therapy.  “A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that if it’s given within 72 hours of them getting sick with symptoms, they are about half as likely to be hospitalized.”

The physician, who has been caring for COVID-19 patients in Plattsburgh since the virus first appeared in the North Country, encourages everyone who has had COVID-19 to consider donating.  “This is a way for people to help. It is probably the best way anyone who’s had COVID-19 can help if they’re willing to at least get screened, to see if they could be a donor. It would make such a big difference,” he said.

The blood of COVID-19 survivors contains antibodies, substances that can attack the virus and help battle the disease. Antibodies are located in plasma, the liquid portion of blood, which is collected during a special donation process called apheresis.

“Anyone who has had COVID will have antibodies however, for convalescent plasma to be effective as a therapy, a certain level of antibodies must be present,” explained Dr. Collins.  Donors are screened prior to the donation process to determine the level of antibodies in their plasma.  “A good rule of thumb is that if you have been hospitalized because of COVID-19 it’s likely your plasma contains an appropriate amount of antibodies.”

In an effort to recruit donors and raise awareness about the benefits of convalescent plasma, CVPH is sharing information with COVID-survivors as they leave the hospital and includes additional information on the Adirondack Region Blood Center webpage, UVMHealth.org/GiveBlood.

Donors must also be at least 14 days COVID symptom-free or have a negative test and meet all other blood donation requirements. Anyone who is vaccinated against COVID-19 is not eligible to donate convalescent plasma at this time.

Donations take place by appointment at the Adirondack Region Blood Center, 85 Plaza Blvd. The process takes about 30 minutes to complete.  Appointments can be scheduled by calling (518) 562-7406.

Homeless Vermonters Are Having Trouble Getting Their Federal Stimulus Checks | Economy | Seven Days | Vermont’s Independent Voice

Kari Rios once had everything she needed: an apartment, a well-paying job, a reliable car. As a single mother, she had some long days. But those pillars of stability made her feel that nothing could stop her.  “I was on top of the world,” she recalled. Then, in early 2017, her son’s father stopped paying child support. Suddenly her nursing assistant salary was no longer enough — for the $1,249 rent, and the gas, and the heat, and the groceries. The bills piled up until the only thing that felt unstoppable

Regular worship services will continue every Sunday in each church as long as it is safe to do so, depending on community COVID-19 infection numbers, and both congregations will continue to observe CDC and Conference safety protocols.

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s March 31st COVID-19 Update

March 31, 2021.
The risk from COVID-19 is still high in New York State, and although we continue to make progress vaccinating New Yorkers, now is not the time to give up on safe behaviors that we know reduce the spread. The vaccine works, but only if we take it, and we can’t afford to slow down because we are in a foot race against the infection rate. New vaccination sites are opening and eligibility continues to expand, but the virus is still spreading—and the rate of spread is a function of our behavior. We’re going to defeat COVID and return to more fulfilling lives together, but for now, everyone needs to stay vigilant.
Vaccine FAQ of the Day: You can’t get COVID from the COVID-19 vaccines. Get the facts: ny.gov/vaccine
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations dropped to 4,651. Of the 220,369 tests reported yesterday, 8,382, or 3.80 percent, were positive. The 7-day average positivity rate was 3.47 percent. There were 899 patients in ICU yesterday, down four from the previous day. Of them, 533 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 62 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11 am this morning, 30.4 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 192,853 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 9,421,951 total doses with 17.9 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker.
3. We are expanding the New York Forward Rapid Testing Program to help businesses and events safely reopen. Twenty-five new sites will open Thursday, April 1, and 10 sites will open within the next two weeks for a total of 70 sites statewide. The New York Forward Rapid Test Program provides affordable rapid (30 minutes or less) COVID tests at locations across the State. Learn more.
4. See how Excelsior Pass can help you be a part of NY’s safe reopening. To help revitalize New York’s economy safely, the State launched Excelsior Pass—a free and voluntary platform for businesses & individuals that can be used to easily access secure proof of a recent negative COVID test or vaccination. The Excelsior Pass Wallet app is available for both iOS and Android devices. Learn more.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: Some bonds are unbreakable—even between a dog and a stuffed animal. Sisu, a lab mix stray in North Carolina, was found repeatedly sneaking into a North Carolina Dollar General store. Every single time, he would go directly to a purple unicorn stuffed animal in the toy aisle. After many attempts, the store employees were able to catch Sisu and call animal control to bring him to a shelter. But before taking him to the shelter, animal control officer Samantha Lane saw how attached the pup was to the stuffed animal and bought the unicorn for him. Sisu and his beloved toy are now safe at the Duplin County Animal Services shelter.
