Governor Andrew Cuomo’s March 17th COVID-19 Update

March 17, 2021.
As of today, New York has administered seven million vaccine shots to eligible New Yorkers, which is great progress. Earlier today, I got the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at the Mount Neboh Baptist Church vaccination site to help spread a key message that all the vaccines work, all of them are safe and New Yorkers should take whatever vaccine they can as soon as they can. We will continue to move our vaccination progress forward as fast as supply allows but as soon as you are eligible, get any of the three vaccines—they are safe and effective. Protect yourself and your family.
Photo of the Day: Today I got my shot of the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations dropped to 4,624. Of the 263,401 tests reported yesterday, 8,976, or 3.41 percent, were positive. There were 954 patients in ICU yesterday, up 11 from the previous day. Of them, 601 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 54 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11 am this morning, 23.5 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 148,564 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 7,003,834 total doses with 12.2 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker.
3. Appointments are now available at ten new state-run mass vaccination sites across the state. All ten sites will open on Friday, March 19, and will operate from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. Each site will have the ability to vaccinate more than one thousand New Yorkers daily dependent on supply from the federal government. Appointments at the sites located in New York City, Long Island, Hudson Valley, Capital Region, Southern Tier, Mohawk Valley and Western New York regions available for booking today at ny.gov/GetVaccinated or by calling the NYS COVID-19 Vaccine Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4-VAX (1-833-697-4829).
4. Indoor fitness classes can resume at limited capacity on March 22. Indoor fitness classes can begin reopening statewide at 33 percent capacity with health screening and contact information required at sign-in. Classes should be scheduled to allow additional time for cleaning and disinfection between sessions. Local health departments shall inspect before or within 2 weeks of the fitness center opening to ensure compliance.
5. Beginning April 5, the 11 pm curfew currently in place for casinos, movie theaters, bowling alleys, billiards halls, gyms and fitness centers will be lifted. The 11 pm curfew for food and beverage establishments and the midnight curfew for catered events will remain in effect. Both curfews will be re-evaluated in late April.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: When a lost bulldog found its way onto train tracks, two LIRR employees jumped to his rescue. Dog owner Mike Francow was eating his lunch in East Hampton, NY, when his 8-year-old English bulldog Sampson ran away onto nearby train tracks. Thankfully, LIRR engineer Christian Beck saw the lost dog in time to slow down the train to protect the canine. Along with assistant conductor Vinny Fragale, the two lured Sampson onto their train and were able to reunite the bulldog with his owner. Great work by our LIRR team.

Gus’ Red Hots To Reopen

Fesette Realty is pleased to announce the purchase of beloved landmark restaurant, Gus’ Red Hots, by locals, Rob Steele and his wife Jennette.
They aim to carry on the legacy left by the previous owners, the Lambrinos family.
Rob and Jennette have a tentative opening date of late April to early May.
While they intend to preserve the character of Gus’, they also aspire to add:
-A large front deck for outdoor seating
-A side quick serve snack shack for food and ice cream with seating
-New add-ons to the current menu along with specials
Rob and Jennette hope to cater to not only the local community, but those getting off the ferry looking for breakfast or lunch, beachgoers, and campers.
Principal broker and owner, Neil Fesette, said, “I’m so excited for Rob and Jennette as they prepare for their grand opening of Gus’ Red Hots. The Lambrinos, Larios and Niforos family did an amazing job at Gus’ over the past 70 years. Rob and Jennette plan to continue Gus’ tradition and make some improvements to their restaurant that I’m sure will be enjoyed for many years to come.”

Bob Smith, Owner of Nine Platt Group, Best Western Plus, Named 62nd Irishman of the Year

Bob Smith, center, holding green plaque

From the North County Chamber of Commerce
Updated with additional information 3/18/21 Plattsburgh – 3/17/2021 – The North Country Chamber of Commerce has been hosting the St.Patrick’s Day event for more than 60 years. After a rough 2020, we came back this year– virtually, but that did not stop us from some IrishShenanigans!
This special event honors the Irish person of the Year, a tradition based on the dedication of volunteerism, whether in business, community, or civic activities…or a combination of any of these. This year the Chamber honored Bob Smith as Irishman of the Year. A well-deserved recipient who has proven his dedication and support to the North Country for many, many years.
For those of you who don’t know Bob Smith, he has been an incredible leader in our community for more than 45 years. He is the owner of Nine Platt Hospitality group, which includes Best Western Plus – Plattsburgh, and the former Ground Round. He has been active for years in charitable and services organizations. Beyond that, he was one of the leaders in developing and advocating for the Clinton County Occupancy tax. If you need a hand Bob is there! As he liked to say, “There is no right way to do the wrong thing!”
He is married to the love of his life, Diane and they have 3 kids, Lindsey, Kristen and Michael, as well as 5 grandchildren. And we would be remised if we did not mention his adorable furchild, Quincy, a 100lb Bernadoodle. He credits his success to his family, especially his wife, Diane, his staff, including his COO and all-around right arm Julie Kramer and his father for teaching him the value of community. Fun fact, Bob’s father was also named Irishperson of the year in 1972, so this is one of the few Father & Son Irishperson duos.
Amidst a pandemic, the Chamber had to once again go virtual but we wanted to ensure an entertaining event – not just your typical webinar with a guy at the podium! Sponsors were supportive of our change of plans (THANK YOU!) and we were thrilled to host this annual event. A reimagined event with Matt Boire at the helm channeling his best “TonightShow” host impression and commanding the room (or camera) for an hour of merriment. Then we left it in the capable hands of Chris Boire who produced the show.
We appreciate everyone who joined this morning and we hope you were entertained and saw that virtual events don’t have to be boring! We could not have done this without the support of our sponsors: Dannemora Federal Credit Union (and thanks for the wine fridge!)
CDPHP
Kavanaugh Realty (Thanks for the wine!)
Boire Benner Group
We must give a special extra shout out to Matt Boire, for going along with us as we reworked this event, he spent countless hours writing scripts and having a camera up close and personal, Kevin Killeen who although he thought he “retired” from this gig, came back out in full force to help, Deacon Mark Bennett for his blessing, Kelly Donoghue and Jay Lesage for the rendition of Danny Boy, Matt Spiegel and his team at Olive Ridley’s, Adam Crosley and Gaelen Trombley for their singing abilities, as well as Chris and Jacob at Boire Benner Group who transformed the chaos into reality!
We cannot thank everyone enough for their continued support – your Chamber team appreciates it!

NYS Senate wants to allow Cuomo to speed up prison closures | NCPR News

Cuomo has shut down 21 prisons since he became governor in 2011. There are plans for more, according to his executive budget proposal. He is asking for the same authority from the state Legislature — to close prisons as long as he gives legislative leaders 90 days’ notice. There is a difference this time, though. Instead of having that authority in one fiscal year, he wants it spread over two fiscal years. That would allow him to speed up the closure of prisons during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 fiscal years.
