Violin-Saxophone-Piano Trio Playing At U.S. Oval Gazebo On June 12

Metamusic, the professional violin-saxophone-piano trio that has evolved into one of the region’s favorite classical chamber music ensembles in recent years, will continue the Curbside At Harborside concert series with a concert on June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the U.S. Oval Gazebo.

Featuring Marilyn Reynolds — a veteran of performance venues from Broadway to the Orchestra of St. Luke’s — on violin, international performing artist Daniel Gordon on saxophone, and acclaimed Piano By Nature Artistic Director Rose Chancler on piano, Metamusic presents classical music that explores the singing and coloristic possibilities of their instruments in dialogue with each other. Inspired by a World Saxophone Congress performance that Gordon attended in Montreal, the saxophone recruited Chancler and Reynolds to engage in this unique musical endeavor. After reading through a stack of music written for this configuration of instruments, the three highly tenured professionals realized that they had found an ideal combination: beautifully written, under-appreciated repertoire to perform in an atmosphere of mutual collegiality and respect.

The trio has remained together ever since, performing everywhere from Finland to Texas. By continuing to mine the gems of this often-overlooked repertoire, commissioning composers to create new works for their group, and developing carefully transcribed arrangements of larger-scale compositions, the three artists have realized that their possibilities as a group are endless.

“Song and Dance” is the theme of their concert in Plattsburgh, featuring music by Camille Saint-Saens, Sergei Prokofiev, Aram Khachaturian, and Sergei Rachmaninoff, along with several composers who are not household names but whose music deserves far greater attention than it presently receives. Khachaturian’s Sabre Dance will be a guaranteed highlight, with its pulsating theme familiar to anyone who has ever seen a tense chase scene in a black-and-white movie or a Bugs Bunny cartoon, or anyone who ever marveled at the plate spinners on the Ed Sullivan Show. Featuring Tours of the Historic Bluff Point Lighthouse with additional historic island farm tours

Transportation leaving every 20 minutes from 9:30 am to 1:20 pm

Peru Dock, 3930 State Route 9, Plattsburgh, $30 per person

The public is invited to join the Clinton County Historical Association (CCHA) on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at the Peru Dock for the opportunity to visit the historic Bluff Point Lighthouse on Valcour Island.  Round trip transportation will be provided for $30 per person.  The fee will include a trail guide and George Clifford’s book on Lake Champlain Lighthouses. Special Lighthouse T-Shirts will also be on sale that day.  The boat, that holds 4-5 people per trip, will begin shuttling at 9:30 am with trips to the island every 20 minutes.  The Lighthouse will close at 2:30 pm and all visitors to the Island must return by 3 pm.  In the event of wind or thunderstorms the tour will be cancelled and a rain date registration for August 8th will be offered. Refunds due to the cancellation will be made if requested.  At 10:30 am and 1:00 pm Roger Harwood will host a short tour of the historic Harney farm location.

Pre-Registration, payment and scheduling departure times must be done by July 7th to guarantee a spot on the boat.  Once on the island a Docent will be available for tours of the Lighthouse. Participants must be aware that the trip requires the physical ability to debark and board from the Island’s natural landing, walking on uneven surfaces over rough terrain and climbing stairs.  The Island is also famous for poison ivy plants.  An adult must accompany anyone under the age of 12 and those under the age of 16 must bring and wear their own life jackets.  Individuals may bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while on the island and must carry out what you carry in.

Visitors to the Lighthouse will view displays depicting the history of Lake Champlain Lighthouses, Lake Champlain’s Military History, the 20^th Century Camps on Valcour Island and the Life of a Lighthouse Keeper. Visitors may climb to the Lantern Room to see the functioning light and the outstanding view it offers.

The Clinton County Historical Association is pleased to resume its sponsorship of local Cemetery tours with a tour of four cemeteries on Saturday June 19^th.  The tours will begin at 9:30 am at the St. Augustine’s Church Cemetery in Peru with hosts John and Jean Ryan.  At 10:30 the tour will move to the Old Peru Cemetery, and then to the God’s Acre Cemetery at 11:30 am.   Handouts will include site guides, brief cemetery histories, and instructions on how to safely clean cemetery stones.  Obituaries, as available, will posted near cemetery stones. After a lunch break there will be a tour of the Quaker Cemetery on Union Road in the Town of Ausable. Program participants will meet at 9:30 am in the St. Augustine’s Church parking lot in Peru.  Lunch will be at the Quaker Cemetery just prior to that tour.  The tours are scheduled to finish by 2:30 pm.  The cost is $15 per person or $25 per couple and includes lunch and handouts. Source: Surprise beach opening elates city residents | Sun Community News PLATTSBURGH | Within an hour of a surprise opening of the Plattsburgh City Beach, residents flocked to the sandy shores to enjoy an early taste of summer.

#1 – Adirondack Farms was cutting an extremely good hay crop in small fields adjacent to the Barney Downs. Rd. A quarter mile away on the River Rd. another Adirondack Farms machine was tedding cut hay prior to its being chopped. AMAZING TECHNOLOGY!!!!!!

Story #2 – Forrence orchard workers installed apple tree netting today in an orchard adjacent to the River Rd. and Barney Downs Rd. The netting protects the valuable Honeycrisp trees from hail and pests. This is the 4th consecutive year Forrence’s are using netting in this orchard. The netting is reusable. It has a fifteen to twenty-year lifetime. 

Story #3 – Workers constructing a concert stage at Heyworth-Mason Park. The town plans to host its Sunday evening concerts at the park this year.

Story #4 – Many people walk dogs at Heyworth-Mason Park. Jillian Kezar walks her boa constrictor named Jackson. At six years of age, Jackson’s not too big, but Jillian said he should eventually grow to seven to nine feet long. She stated that boas live fifteen to thirty years. This is her third snake.
