Governor Andrew Cuomo’s March 19th COVID-19 Update

March 19, 2021
As more New Yorkers are vaccinated we are beginning to look to the future and get activity and the economy back up and running. It is important to remember that it’s only with the dedication and grit of New Yorkers that we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We’re not there yet, and as we enter spring we need to keep up the practices that will get us there: wash your hands, wear a mask and practice social distancing. And one more—when it is your turn get vaccinated. Take any one offered—protect yourself and your community.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations dropped to 4,527. Of the 278,590 tests reported yesterday, 8,262, or 2.97 percent, were positive. There were 924 patients in ICU yesterday, down 10 from the previous day. Of them, 587 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 59 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11 am this morning, 24.6 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 183,924 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 7,305,768 total doses with 12.7 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker.
3. Effective Monday, Mach 22, the final five remaining yellow zone clusters in New York State will be lifted. Those clusters are in the East Bronx, West Bronx, Manhattan, Newburgh, New Windsor and Kew Gardens/Forest Hills in Queens. Any specific restrictions in those locations will be lifted and aligned with statewide guidance.
4. Indoor dining in New York City expanded to 50 percent capacity beginning today, March 19. Previously, New York City and New Jersey restaurants are operating at 35 percent capacity. This decision is made concurrently with neighboring New Jersey also expanding indoor dining to 50 percent. Restaurants outsides of New York City expanded to 75 percent capacity today. Other health guidelines remain in place.
5. The Department of Tax and Finance will be extending the New York State income tax deadline to May 17. This aligns with the federal decision to do the same and provides New Yorkers still coping with the complications of the COVID-19 pandemic ample time to file.
6. Sixteen community-based pop-up vaccination sites are coming online over the next week. These sites at churches, public housing developments and community centers are expected to vaccinate more than 4,500 people throughout the week. Since January 15, more than 145 community-based pop-up sites have administered more than 55,000 first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. As has been the case with previous pop-up sites, these sites will be re-established in three weeks to administer second doses.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: In the Village of Sleepy Hollow, a Community Wardrobe is providing free clothes to those in need. Established by the Horseman PTA, the Community Wardrobe accepts donated clothes and shoes. Residents of the neighborhood can then “shop” for what they need. During the pandemic, the Community Wardrobe is by appointment only but the PTA hopes that after COVID, they can keep the operation running and won’t require appointments.

Assemblyman Jones: Expand Vaccine Eligibility To All New Yorkers

“After visiting local vaccination sites and hearing from so many of my constituents who want the vaccine but are not yet eligible, it is clear that the state vaccination distribution network is working efficiently and is prepared to open eligibility for all New Yorkers. While it is great that eligibility expanded this week, many people in the North Country were still excluded from this list including many essential workers. While critics may be calling for the federal government to take control of vaccine distribution, I believe that New York, particularly the North Country, already has a vaccination distribution plan in place that is working hard to ensure that all who wish to be vaccinated are able to do so. With so many vaccine appointments available throughout the North Country, it is time for the Governor to open the eligibility to any North Country resident who is ready and willing to receive the vaccine.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s March 18th COVID-19 Update

March 18, 2021.
New Yorkers loves to root for the home team, and it was especially difficult to see great professional sports teams close to fans in stands as we implemented restrictions necessary to protect public health. Today I am pleased to announce that baseball is coming back to New York and fans will be able to attend games in-person. On April 1, the New York Mets and New York Yankees can resume playing with spectators in the stadiums. Professional sports in large outdoor stadiums that hold 10,000 people or more will be allowed to reopen at 20 percent capacity. Attendees must show proof of a recent negative test or completed vaccination series prior to entry and are subject to strict state guidance on face coverings, social distancing and health screenings. Vaccination efforts at both Yankee Stadium and Citi Field will still continue during the MLB season.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations dropped to 4,536. Of the 271,463 tests reported yesterday, 7,796, or 2.87 percent, were positive. There were 934 patients in ICU yesterday, down 20 from the previous day. Of them, 590 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 57 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 1 pm this morning, 24.0 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 146,518 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 7,150,352 total doses with 12.4 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker.
3. Smaller, regional sports venues can also reopen beginning April 1. These are venues that hold 1,500 people indoors or 2,500 people outdoors and initial capacity will be limited to 10 percent indoors and 20 percent outdoors. Attendees must show proof of a recent negative test or completed vaccination series prior to entry and are subject to strict state guidance on face coverings, social distancing and health screenings.
4. Beginning March 29, statewide travel for sports and recreational activities will be permitted. Currently, travel for sports and recreation is limited to contiguous counties and regions in accordance with New York State Department of Health guidance.
5. Large outdoor performing arts venues, including stadiums, that hold more than 2,500 people can reopen at 20 percent capacity beginning April 1. Venue capacity for concerts and other performing arts events will continue to increase as the public health situation improves with more New Yorkers receiving vaccinations and fewer COVID-19 cases in the community. Attendees must show proof of a recent negative test or completed vaccination series prior to entry and are subject to strict state guidance on face coverings, social distancing and health screenings.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: It’s not every day that you’re treated to a surprise performance from world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. At the Berkshire Community College vaccination site in Massachusetts, people who came for their COVID-19 vaccine shot were treated to a surprise performance from the cellist, who received his second COVID-19 shot at the site. Throughout the pandemic, Yo-Yo Ma has been streaming performances on social media and his performance at the vaccination site was his way to help give something back.
