North Country network to get nearly $900k in addiction funding | Sun Community News PLATTSBURGH |

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s March 12th COVID-19 Update

” I signed legislation granting employees time off to get the COVID-19 vaccine. No employee should be penalized for needing time off to get vaccinated. Under this new law, public and private employees will be granted up to four hours of excused leave per shot that will not be charged against any other leave the employee has earned or accrued. This legislation takes effect immediately.”
We’re making progress each day in holding the infection rate down and by vaccinating more New Yorkers, but we have more work to do to end this pandemic and to get New York back to safety. We have faced huge challenges with discipline and toughness, and we can make it through as we see the light at the end of the tunnel. New York State is expanding its vaccine distribution network to get more shots in arms, and we’ll be able to ramp up vaccinations once the supply increases. In the meantime, New Yorkers should continue washing hands, wearing masks and social distancing as we get through this pandemic together.
Photo of the Day: The 10,000th vaccine dose was administered at the NYS/FEMA mass vaccination site in Buffalo today
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations dropped to 4,634. Of the 299,278 tests reported yesterday, 9,299, or 3.11 percent, were positive. There were 935 patients in ICU yesterday, down 20 from the previous day. Of them, 639 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 74 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 21.0 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 178,118 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 6,264,136 total doses with 10.7 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker.

This legislation takes effect immediately.
4. The State is expanding the New York Forward Rapid Test Program to help businesses reopen. The Rapid Test Program connects New Yorkers with affordable rapid tests: $30 in 30 minutes. Within the next week, 26 sites will open in New York City, Hudson Valley, Capital Region, Western New York and on Long Island for a total of 38 active sites statewide. To make an appointment, visit the program website.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: Retired ski racer and Olympic medalist Andrew Weibrecht is taking to the slopes again to raise money for charity. The native New Yorker plans to ski all 46 of the Adirondack High Peaks in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast New York. So far, Weibrecht has completed eight of the peaks and hopes to complete the challenge next winter.

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s March 11 COVID-19 Update

With more and more New Yorkers getting vaccinated every day, we are moving toward a final stage in our fight against COVID. To date, New York has administered more than 6 million total doses of vaccine across the state, with more than 1 million doses administered at New York State-run mass vaccination sites. Even as we reach new milestones, we are still in a footrace to make sure the vaccination rate remains ahead of the infection rate. We have a strong process in place and we will continue working and vaccinating until New York becomes the first COVID-free state in the nation.
Vaccine Tip of the Day: New Yorkers can trust the vaccines are safe, effective and free.
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. COVID hospitalizations dropped to 4,735. Of the 243,153 tests reported yesterday, 6,747, or 2.77 percent, were positive. There were 955 patients in ICU yesterday, down 44 from the previous day. Of them, 665 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 80 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. As of 11am this morning, 20.4 percent of New Yorkers have completed at least one vaccine dose. Over the past 24 hours, 144,946 total doses have been administered. To date, New York administered 6,086,018 total doses with 10.4 percent of New Yorkers completing their vaccine series. See data by region and county on the State’s Vaccine Tracker: ny.gov/vaccinetracker.
3. Starting April 1, quarantine for domestic travel to New York will no longer be required. Mandatory quarantine will remain for international travelers. The Department of Health still recommends quarantine as an added precaution and all travelers must complete the Traveler Health Form.
4. Fourteen community-based pop-up vaccination sites will come online this week. These sites are expected to vaccinate more than 4,000 people throughout the week. Since January 15, 135 community-based pop-up sites have administered more than 54,000 first doses and more than 41,000 second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. As has been the case with previous pop-up sites, these sites will be re-established in three weeks to administer second doses.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: Most cardinals are a vibrant red but on rare occasions, one might come across a yellow cardinal. In Rushville, Illinois, Chelsea Curry and her husband are among those lucky few to see the rare yellow bird, and in their own backyard. There are about 50 million red cardinals and only about 10 or 12 yellow feathered cardinals in the eastern United States and eastern Canada, so spotting one is an extremely rare and lucky sight.

How the new 2021 ‘child tax credit’ works, and what it means for North Country families | NCPR News

Imagine going out to your mailbox each month, and picking up a $300 check for each of your children. That’s what the new child tax credit will look like. The current child tax credit is up to $2,000 per child per. Under the new stimulus bill, it’ll jump to $3600 a year for kids under 5, and $3000 for school aged children up to 17.  In perhaps the biggest change, the new credit is available to way more families.

Stefanik, Malliotakis Introduce Bill to Extend PPP Deadline

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik cosponsored a bill introduced by Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) to amend the Small Business Act and the CARES Act to extend the covered period for the Paycheck Protection Program until June 30, 2021. Currently, the deadline to apply for funds is March 31, 2021.
Congresswoman Stefanik issued the following statement: “More than $128 billion for small businesses through the Paycheck Protection Program remains, but the deadline to apply is less than 3 weeks away. North Country small businesses are still hurting, and it’s absolutely essential this bill is passed to give them more time to determine their loan amount eligibility, file an application, resolve any potential issues, and access these critical funds.”
“I’ve heard from small businesses all across my district that are still struggling to keep their doors open because of the city and state’s arbitrary guidelines and closure mandates,” said Congresswoman Malliotakis. “Many of these businesses are still filling out their loan applications, struggling to navigate the difficulties of the SBA system while also working to keep their expenses in check. My bill aims to ensure these small businesses have ample time to apply and receive the financial assistance they desperately need because of government inaction.”
