Recycling Electronics This Holiday Season

NYS DEC says:

Recycling Electronics

With holiday cheer and gifts galore, many of you will give or receive new electronic equipment. As you switch out of the old and welcome the new, please remember to recycle your old electronics responsibly.

Examples of common electronic equipment that must be recycled:

  • Computers (desktops, laptops, e-readers, tablets, etc.)
  • Computer peripherals (mice, keyboards, monitors, printers, etc.)
  • Small electronic equipment (DVR’s, DVD players, MP3 players, video game consoles, etc.)
  • Televisions

It is illegal to dispose of these and other covered electronic equipment (CEE) in the trash under New York’s electronic waste law.

How to recycle electronics:
Visit DEC’s Consumer Electronic Waste Recycling webpage for information on all available recycling/reuse opportunities.

Manufacturers of CEE are required to provide consumers a free and convenient opportunity to recycle their equipment or one piece of CEE from another manufacturer with the purchase of the same type. Depending on a specific manufacturer’s acceptance program, CEE recycling/reuse opportunities may include permanent collection locations, local collection events, mail-back programs, or at-home pickup (when no other free and convenient option is offered).

Questions or concerns? Contact the E-waste Recycling Team.

New York’s mass-vaccination plans are shelved as Cuomo takes different path

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Dec. 23 COVID-19 Update

December 23, 2020.
We’re in a footrace between the vaccination program and the growing spread of COVID. So far, 89,000 New Yorkers have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose. 22,000 New Yorkers received their first dose at 90 nursing home facilities, during just the first two days of a federal-private partnership program in which New York is participating. As we continue to roll out the vaccine, I remind all New Yorkers to stay vigilant, especially over the holidays—wear a mask, social distance, continue to wash your hands. Celebrate smart. Happy holidays, New York.
PROGRAMMING NOTE: The Coronavirus newsletter will not publish tomorrow, December 24th, or Friday, December 25th. We will resume on Monday, December 28th.
Photo of the Day: A boy picks out a toy as part of New York State’s annual holiday toy and coat drive. I thank donors for their help in distributing more than 7,300 toys, coats and school supplies across the state. (Photo by Don Pollard)
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. Total hospitalizations rose to 6,864. Of the 204,361 tests reported yesterday, 11,937, or 5.84 percent, were positive. There were 1,166 patients in ICU yesterday, up 40 from the previous day. Of them, 633 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 164 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. The State is working on a plan to allow fans to attend the Buffalo Bills’ first home playoff game in more than two decades under strict COVID-19 protocols. Under the proposal, which is being developed cooperatively between the Bills and the State Department of Health, fans in attendance would be required to receive a negative COVID-19 test result before being allowed into the stadium and contact tracing would be conducted after the game.
3. The Department of Financial Services issued guidance that will help expand New York’s hospital capacity. DFS is directing insurers to suspend certain preauthorization and administrative requirements to help hospitals implement New York’s “surge and flex” protocol. With today’s action, hospitals will be able to quickly transfer patients between hospitals, better balance patient load and more.
4. The New York State Department of Health has authorized the use of extra doses that have been found in Moderna vaccine vials. We have learned that many 10-dose vials of the Moderna vaccine have enough of the vaccine for 11 doses. (The Pfizer vaccine, similarly, found to have extra doses.) The Department of Health issued guidance on administering these extra doses.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: The legendary Charles W. Howard of Albion, NY, who was one the most famous Santa Claus portrayers in history, will have a road in his hometown named in his honor. Howard, who died in 1966, took up the red-and-white mantle (and beard) after being dissatisfied with existing Santa Claus performers. He started at local department stores and later opened the first Santa School in Albion, where he taught hundreds of Santa’s helpers to look, dress and act like elves—helping spread the season’s cheer to countless children. He played Santa for 18 years in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and even consulted on the 1947 holiday classic Miracle on 34th Street.
If you were forwarded this email, you can subscribe to New York State’s Coronavirus Updates here.
Ever Upward,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

COVID-19 December 23 Updates

COVID-19 Vaccine Updates

More vaccines are coming to New York every day- 346,000 Moderna vaccines are coming this week and 120,000 more Pfizer doses are arriving this week.

New York expects to have a total of 630,000 total doses by this week.

This week, New York increases the priority populations that the hospitals will be allowed to administer to include:

  • Federally qualified health center workers
  • EMTs
  • Coroners
  • Medical examiners
  • Funeral home workers
  • Other congregate care workers and residents
This week New York also started the federal program to vaccinate nursing home residents and staff -residents and staff – in nursing homes.

New York has worked with the pharmacies and the federal government: CVS is going to do 271, Walgreens 253, other pharmacies 94.

There are 618 nursing homes that are enrolled in the program.

New York is also putting together vaccination kits that can be sent throughout the state that are fully contained to do vaccinations for a community.

They are called community vaccination kits and everything you need will be contained in one shipping container.

You can send the shipping container right to a public housing authority, to a church, to a community center, to anywhere in the state and it will contain computers, IT, medicines, wall dividers, tables, chairs, schematic for how to set up the space.

General COVID-19 Updates

As the holidays approach, please remember that the most common way New Yorkers are contracting COVID-19 is through small gatherings, or what is commonly called living room spread.

Please protect yourself and your loved ones this holiday season and practice social distancing.

There is also a new strain of COVID-19 spreading in the United Kingdom causing the country to lockdown.

In response, British Airways, Delta, and Virgin Atlantic have agreed to require all passengers flying from the United Kingdom to New York to complete pre-boarding COVID-19 testing.

New E-books and Audiobooks Available for CVES Students

The Champlain Valley Educational Services School Library System and Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System have partnered to increase access to more e-books and e-audiobooks for area students.
The collaboration includes all CVES school districts that are part of the CEFLS service area.

Students can now borrow age-appropriate digital titles from the public library system, in addition to those offered to their school district through CVES.

Both the school and public library collections can be searched through the Sora app using one login.

Students can install Sora from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store or by visiting their website here.

All students attending a CVES component district have a login ID and can contact their school librarian for this information.

Students in area districts can also access OverDrive eBooks, eAudiobooks and educational videos via this site using their Sora login ID.

Residents in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties can also access titles from the CEFLS eBook and eAudiobook collection using their library cards at this website.

If you don’t have a library card, you can contact your local library to apply.

Watch Out For COVID-19 Vaccine Scams

Watch out for COVID-19 vaccine scams

As the country begins to distribute COVID-19 vaccines, there’s no doubt scammers are already scheming.

Medicare covers the COVID-19 vaccine, so there will be no cost to you. If anyone asks you to share your Medicare Number or pay for access to the vaccine, you can bet it’s a scam.

Here’s what to know:

  • You can’t pay to put your name on a list to get the vaccine.
  • You can’t pay to get early access to a vaccine.
  • Don’t share your personal or financial information if someone calls, texts, or emails you promising access to the vaccine for a fee.

More Info

If you come across a COVID-19 vaccine scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission or call us at 1-800-MEDICARE. And check out CDC.gov for trustworthy information on the COVID-19 vaccine.

Sincerely,

The Medicare Team
