COVID-19 December 23 Updates

COVID-19 Vaccine Updates

More vaccines are coming to New York every day- 346,000 Moderna vaccines are coming this week and 120,000 more Pfizer doses are arriving this week.

New York expects to have a total of 630,000 total doses by this week.

This week, New York increases the priority populations that the hospitals will be allowed to administer to include:

  • Federally qualified health center workers
  • EMTs
  • Coroners
  • Medical examiners
  • Funeral home workers
  • Other congregate care workers and residents
This week New York also started the federal program to vaccinate nursing home residents and staff -residents and staff – in nursing homes.

New York has worked with the pharmacies and the federal government: CVS is going to do 271, Walgreens 253, other pharmacies 94.

There are 618 nursing homes that are enrolled in the program.

New York is also putting together vaccination kits that can be sent throughout the state that are fully contained to do vaccinations for a community.

They are called community vaccination kits and everything you need will be contained in one shipping container.

You can send the shipping container right to a public housing authority, to a church, to a community center, to anywhere in the state and it will contain computers, IT, medicines, wall dividers, tables, chairs, schematic for how to set up the space.

General COVID-19 Updates

As the holidays approach, please remember that the most common way New Yorkers are contracting COVID-19 is through small gatherings, or what is commonly called living room spread.

Please protect yourself and your loved ones this holiday season and practice social distancing.

There is also a new strain of COVID-19 spreading in the United Kingdom causing the country to lockdown.

In response, British Airways, Delta, and Virgin Atlantic have agreed to require all passengers flying from the United Kingdom to New York to complete pre-boarding COVID-19 testing.

New E-books and Audiobooks Available for CVES Students

The Champlain Valley Educational Services School Library System and Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System have partnered to increase access to more e-books and e-audiobooks for area students.
The collaboration includes all CVES school districts that are part of the CEFLS service area.

Students can now borrow age-appropriate digital titles from the public library system, in addition to those offered to their school district through CVES.

Both the school and public library collections can be searched through the Sora app using one login.

Students can install Sora from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store or by visiting their website here.

All students attending a CVES component district have a login ID and can contact their school librarian for this information.

Students in area districts can also access OverDrive eBooks, eAudiobooks and educational videos via this site using their Sora login ID.

Residents in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties can also access titles from the CEFLS eBook and eAudiobook collection using their library cards at this website.

If you don’t have a library card, you can contact your local library to apply.

Visit this site for contact information.

Watch Out For COVID-19 Vaccine Scams

Watch out for COVID-19 vaccine scams

As the country begins to distribute COVID-19 vaccines, there’s no doubt scammers are already scheming.

Medicare covers the COVID-19 vaccine, so there will be no cost to you. If anyone asks you to share your Medicare Number or pay for access to the vaccine, you can bet it’s a scam.

Here’s what to know:

  • You can’t pay to put your name on a list to get the vaccine.
  • You can’t pay to get early access to a vaccine.
  • Don’t share your personal or financial information if someone calls, texts, or emails you promising access to the vaccine for a fee.

More Info

If you come across a COVID-19 vaccine scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission or call us at 1-800-MEDICARE. And check out CDC.gov for trustworthy information on the COVID-19 vaccine.

Sincerely,

The Medicare Team

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Dec. 22 COVID-19 Update

December 22, 2020.
With Christmas and Kwanzaa coming up this week, followed by New Year’s Eve, we all need to do our part to stop the spread. And we can do so by celebrating in different ways this year. This year I encourage New Yorkers to celebrate smart so the virus doesn’t spread to the point where the hospital capacity is at risk. It’s been a long year and I do hope New Yorkers celebrate the holidays—but please celebrate smart.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. New York’s Wadsworth Laboratory has begun aggressive research of the new, more contagious COVID-19 strain discovered in the U.K. Already, Wadsworth has looked at more than 3,700 virus sequences identified in New York. It has yet to find the U.K. variant present in any of the random samples. Additionally, Wadsworth and the Department of Health have made agreements with six hospitals from across the State to obtain additional samples for further research and are making arrangements with other hospitals to do the same. If the variant is already here, we want to know, and we want to be able to aggressively trace it.
2. To date, 50,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered throughout New York. The state has received 630,000 doses thus far and expects to receive another 300,000 doses next week.
3. Virgin Atlantic has also agreed to require pre-departure COVID tests before passengers leave from the U.K. to New York. This is the third major airline to require a COVID-19 test before allowing passengers to board planes traveling from the United Kingdom to New York. I thank British Airways, Delta Airlines and Virgin Atlantic for this agreement.
4. Total hospitalizations rose to 6,661. Of the 164,868 tests reported yesterday, 9,716, or 5.89 percent, were positive. There were 1,126 patients in ICU yesterday, up 31 from the previous day. Of them, 614 are intubated. Sadly, we lost 139 New Yorkers to the virus.
5. It’s important we continue our vaccination program through the holidays. With Christmas and Kwanzaa rapidly approaching, I call on hospitals, nursing homes, and medical personnel to continue providing vaccinations throughout the holidays to ensure nursing home patients and frontline health care workers are protected as quickly as possible.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: Last night, stargazers and photographers looked up at the night sky to witness “The Great Conjunction,” a celestial phenomenon where Saturn and Jupiter appear extremely close together in the sky. Also dubbed “The Christmas Star,” an event of this caliber last occurred 800 years ago. The two planets won’t appear this close together again until 2080.

Ever Upward,
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

Congratulations Darrell! Enjoy a great retirement.

Town Highway Supervisor Mike Farrell (Left) and other department personnel honored Crew Supervisor Darrell Martineau earlier this week at a luncheon held in his honor at GiGi’s on the River Restaurant. Darrell served the people of Peru for 31 1/2 years.

Car Thefts Last Weekend Prompt DEC Advisory

Adirondack High Peaks:
DEC Reminds Hikers to Secure Vehicles and Stow Valuables: A series of vehicle break-ins occurred last weekend at trailheads parking areas along Route 73 in the High Peaks region. DEC and State Police are investigating. Trailhead parking lots are not monitored, and parking is at the user’s own risk. Remember to lock vehicles before leaving trailheads. To minimize risk, do not leave valuable items in your vehicle. If you must bring them, store them out of sight to avoid attracting attention. If that is not possible, store valuables out of sight. If hikers experience a break-in, report the incident to State Police by calling 518-873-2750.
